Absolutely Hilarious!!!,

It's sure not the average autiobiography. There is nothing average about this book. I haven't laughed this hard at a book since David Sedaris' "Me Talk Pretty One Day." It's an incredibly brilliant idea, to pretend that David Steinberg is a character in the Bible and that the stuff of his life takes on biblical significance. Somehow every name in pop culture shows up and God too to reveal all His secrets. If you can't laugh at this, you either dont have a sense of humor or take yourself way too seriously. LOL funny!

I LOVED this book. It's smart and funny...I enjoyed Steinberg's conversations with God.(really funny). It has great stories about Hollywood in the 70's (hanging out with Groucho, Jack Benny etc). I didn't want to put it down..What a great read!

At least it was short,

While there were a couple of amusing moments, they were few and far between. The first reviewer said that if you don't find this funny, you either have no sense of humor or take yourself too seriously. Well I'll tell you who takes himself too seriously - David Steinberg. He tells us that he's on the road constantly chasing women and then seems to ask us to have sympathy that his wife is unhappy and he misses his daughters? While I suppose some might think he's just being tongue in check about how irresistable he is to women, he came off as a major egoist. That got old pretty fast. I appreciate that comparing Nixon's face to a foot might have been groundbreaking in the 70's, but it doesn't do much for me today.

I highly recommend this cleverly written and VERY funny book. Just don't read it in a place where you need to be quiet. I took it with me to a doctor's office while waiting for my husband and literally had to stop reading it because I found myself laughing out loud and startling the other people around me. I can't recommend this book enough and bought extra copies for my friends.

Brilliant,

I agree one hundred percent with Larry King's raves about this book and David Steinberg. I watched Larry King the other night and decided this was a must for my friends. I am a huge fan of David Steinberg's and think this book is hilarious and find myself reading some parts over again. I am hoping David Steinberg continues writing books and can't wait for the next one.

The Book of David by David Steinberg,

Very poorly written. Not humorous at all. David writes the book in "God's Speak" and it is very difficult to follow. Many of his words are made up to sound as if God were saying them to David from the Old Testament. I shelved the book half way through.

I read the bad reviews of this book on here, but got it out of the library anyway. How could a funny guy, write such an unfunny book? I found the pointless pop culture references even more annoying than the Bible stuff. David has had an interesting life and he could have just told the story in a normal style and let the humor come from his reaction to his experiences. (See Al Kooper's Backstage Passes for an example.)

I've liked David Steinberg and his humor since I first saw him at Chicago's Second City many years ago. He also has good hair.
That said, I didn't like this book at all. First of all, since it's written in "Bible-speak", it's extremely difficult to read. It took me forever to plow through the first few chapters. I kept having to read and re-read to try and figure out just what he was saying and most of it wasn't even clever or funny. I hoped there would be anecdotes about his relationships with some of the famous people that influenced his work. I managed to read about half of the book and I was still waiting. He mentions some people like Lenny Bruce and how he would like to be like them but, that's about it. IF, Mr. Steinberg ever writes another book, I'd suggest that it be written in a more normal conversational tone so that more people could understand and relate to what he's saying, that he include some real anecdotes, and leave his fantasies about God out of his book. Such a book might be worth reading.

I was a David Steinberg fan in the 60s and 70s.
This book tries too hard to be in the King James style. It is too egocentric and too sex-crazed. Perhaps guys will enjoy that. There is no depth to the story, and no depth to the person and little interaction with other characters (no dialoge). I find the bible much more entertaining. |
