5.0 out of 5 stars The Book of Destiny: Unlocking the Secrets of the Ancient Mayans and the Prophecy of 2012
This is without question an excellent book that is comprehensively and thoughtfully written. 2.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Introduction to Neo-Mayanism
This book isn't a reliable source of information on Mayan history; the author himself makes clear in the introduction that it is not up to scholarly standards. If you're looking to learn about the ancient Maya, their civilization, religion, and culture, you're going to be disappointed with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book of Destiny: Unlocking the Secrets of the Ancient Mayans and the Prophecy of 2012, September 2, 2009
This is without question an excellent book that is comprehensively and thoughtfully written. Once I understood that this is the only book that has been approved by the Mayan leadership, I decided to read it first, and I'm very glad that I did. However, even if I had read other books on the subject first, I believe that the contents of this book would still have been very valuable. There seems to be so much confusion and fear associated with 2012. This book provides a very sensible, comprehensive understanding of the subject from a person who has the highly credible background to inform us. It is positive in perspective, while at the same time presenting what are serious issues that confront our present world. The book is very well written with a smooth translation of the original text, and so it is also a delight to read. It contains wisdom that is worthwhile to reflect on for a long time to come. I am left with anticipation of reading more from Mr. Barrios about what the Mayan have to share when this is deemed timely to impart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Maya Teachings, November 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a very good book for anyone interested in an authentic overview of Maya teachings as they have been handed down for thousands of years. Readers should be cautious about relying too heavily on the information in many of the books now available on the Maya because they are often based on archeological studies that use interpretations of Maya history and culture made by the Spanish conquerers hundreds of years ago, which, not surprisingly, is completely inaccurate. Carlos Barrios's book is not one of those. I found it fascinating reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book of Destiny, August 19, 2009

Someone has finally written a book which truly describes the true Mayan Path. Don Carlos Barrios is an excellent writer and clearly conveys the essence of the pure meaning of the Mayan spirit and their roll as the time keepers for our age. Don Carlos is and Aqj'ij or Mayan Shaman and has studied the Mayan calenders and hieroglyphics extensively for over 35 years. The knowledge presented in this book represents the true Mayan sign and its meaning for each of the 20 day signs. Readers will find the information very informative and fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, July 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The only book I've found on Mayan calendrics/prophecies from a Mayan shaman and member of the Mayan Elders Council. Has an excellent, detailed section on each of the 20 Cholq'ij day signs. My favorite book on the subject!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much information in this book that you need to know!, January 29, 2010
As a descendant of Mayan heritage, I have read many books concerning the Mayan Calendar and the enigmatic date of 2012 and this is without a doubt the best book that I have been able to find. Many passages in this book will make you think deeply about what is going on in the world and in your own individual life. The Mayan Calendar is truly special because if you truly understand it, you know that it can help you discover the person that you were born to be and realize your purpose in life; that we all are part of a cosmic continuum.
Buy this book, you won't regret it!

This review is from: The Book of Destiny: Unlocking the Secrets of the Ancient Mayans and the Prophecy of 2012 (Paperback)
Mr. Barrios gives us an open-hearted and highly informative understanding of cultures that have maintained a depth of knowledge most have never heard or even been exposed to. He and his Teachers are sublimely enriched by their centuries old calendars with their beautiful symbology. I deeply wish that more of us partake of this generous work directly from the inside and those who may ultimately help save our lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Introduction to Neo-Mayanism, December 23, 2010
This book isn't a reliable source of information on Mayan history; the author himself makes clear in the introduction that it is not up to scholarly standards. If you're looking to learn about the ancient Maya, their civilization, religion, and culture, you're going to be disappointed with this book.

That being said, it is a delightful introduction to neo-Mayanism, that is, how some are practicing the Mayan religion today. The (probably modern) legend of the crystal skulls is taken seriously, and a large portion of the book is dedicated to helping you find your birth sign. The book makes a claim of the existence of Mayan-language inscriptions in an Egyptian pyramid, which if true would be a fascinating development, but which I'm forced to take skeptically at the moment.

For someone interested in the beliefs of other individuals and cultures in modern times, this book might be an entertaining read. If you want a serious look at the Ancient Mayans and their understanding of 2012, you're better off looking somewhere else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, April 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book of course is based on theory. The writer gives too much personal opinion. The book boasts of 356 pages, however from page 173 on has to do with Mayan astrologic (energy) birth signs. The book is over priced. May be worth $8.95 not the over $16.00 that it sells for. I did pick up some information that I did not have before. Takes about 10 hours to read without going through all of the energy sign explanations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark, November 1, 2009
By
Brain Drain (Everywhere, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
Why this book is good:
1. It contains information from someone who claims to be an authority on the Mayan people
2. It has a chapter which explains the nonsense surrounding 2012 and gives the real meaning to the predictions
3. It's cool to look up the Mayan signs of your friends and tell them about their personality (kind of like astrology)

Why this book is bad:
1. It has a chapter (notice I said A chapter) on 2012. The year 2012 is written in big red letters on the cover, but it's only explained within a single 13-page chapter.
2. If the Mayans and Mr. Barrios are truly a worldly people, then why are all of the prophecies validated using events that happened in the U.S.? For example, are we to believe that the Cuban Missile Crisis and the JFK assassination are the result of a negative energy flow? What about the bad things that happened before that, or after that? What about negative things that happened elsewhere in the world? It just doesn't add up.

Maybe my expectations were too high; but I just can't recommend this book. I'll give you the main message: the world isn't going to explode in 2012. The rest of the book is fluff.
