Book Description

For fans of David Rosenfelt, Dean Koontz, Agatha Christie and Lawrence Block’s Burglar Books.

A Number One Cozy Mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Jake Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

“Richard Houston is an author who understands the keys to unlocking a reader's interest from page one… Now, retired, he lives in Missouri where he has built a home by the water and writes books - his first outing being the Jacob Martin mystery series, of which this is the second installment (of what one hopes will be a continuing saga!)… This book, A BOOK TO DIE FOR takes up where A VIEW TO DIE FOR left off - the characters of Jake and his loyal dog Fred are on a new mission…” By Grady Harp HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER

“I reviewed the author’s first mystery and found it a fresh take on the genre with much wry humor. The current one is a welcome follow up. It has one of those incredibly complex plots that had me scratching my head, and a large cast of supporting characters that I had to make notes to keep track of. The main character is Jake Martin, a divorced, unemployed software engineer and writer who is down on his luck, chronically short of money, drives an old car, and lives in a cabin in Colorado with a dog named Fred. Fred is amazing, but more about him later…” By Henry Simpson, Author of the Joe Costa Mysteries.

“Richard Houston has woven a fantastic tale full of mystery, love, deception, and of course- suspense. His style reminds me of the old detective novels I was addicted to as a youngster, the only difference being that in Houston's book, I didn't solve the mystery; I had to wait for the big reveal…” —By Heather S

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Storyteller! April 14, 2014
Format:Paperback
A Book to Die For, written by Richard Houston was an easy read. It was very well thought out. I found Richard to be a great storyteller that kept me captivated. His dialogue was fantastic. I found the book to be suspenseful and well written. You could easily visualize as you read the story, a perfect example would be this excerpt from the novel. “The deputy’s reaction was instant. He had his gun leveled at my head, holding it with both hands just like in the movies. “On the ground, Mister. Now!” At times I chuckled reading the story, “popping a hemorrhoid” (like having a cow) I had never heard that term before and it made me chuckle. I also cried when Fred knew whose ashes were being released. The story was very well done! I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick, Captivating Mystery Of A Man and His Dog May 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not one for mysteries usually but this book was well written and kept my interest. The book is the second in the series written by Richard Houston, sometimes it is hard to pick up where the last finished but this continues with Fred the adorable Golden Retriever and his owner Jake.

The story isn't just a mystery but has elements of a love story, friendships and humour. The cleverly written twists and turns made solving the puzzle throughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mystery May 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
A Book To Die For by Richard Houston was a great read. There is a mystery, action and humor. The characters were well developed and realistic, having both positive and negative traits. And Fred steals the show, he is an awesome dog. The mystery continues throughout the entire book and is not easily solved. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing. The writing style flows easily and the book is an easy read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a well- crafted mystery with rea,is tic characters. This is the first book I've read by Richard Houston but it won't be the last.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant read. April 20, 2014
By Sammie
Format:Kindle Edition
The books I read are generally supernatural in nature and when i started reading this I didn't think it would be for me. However, Richard has the ability to draw you in with the easy flow of his first person narrative. As a reader, you immediately fall in love with Fred, the Golden Retriever and Jake, the main character but it's the clues and questions surrounding Jake's quest that keeps you reading until the very end.

My only small criticism, would be the sub-plots. Sometimes it made it hard to keep up with what was going on but ultimately, I liked it. Much more than I thought I would. I would definitely recommend it to all the people out there that are fans of unraveling secrets and lies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well thought out and holds your attention. May 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hard not to like a detective who really isn't a detective with a partner who's a dog. Can't decide who is smarter but in any case, the story is easy and fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Fred! September 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I finished reading the book, “A View to Die For” last week. I wanted to read the next book in this series, “A Book to Die For”. I love how the dog, Fred, is a major character in this book as he was in the last book. This book is a mystery, love story, and comical all in the same book. It keeps you guessing until the end with lots of twists and turns. I look forward reading more from this author.

Terrible. I made the mistake of purchasing two of his books at the same time. They both read like a highschool freshman with a drinking problem wrote them.

More About the Author

Richard Houston was as a carpenter for 20 years while working his way through college. After earning a bachelor's degree in math he spent the next 25 years as a successful software engineer. Although he found success in those professions, he always dreamed of someday writing a novel. He honed that craft by taking every creative writing class he could. Somehow his poems and short stories usually had a dog as a major character. One in particular, Begging Not for Love, was published by the Mendocino Review.

Richard now lives and writes at his lake home in Missouri where he and his wife are raising their granddaughter and two dachshunds.
