Book Description

September 1, 1999
What does the future hold in store for you? What secrets lie hidden in your stars (or in your cup of tea)? Since ancient times, humankind has sought to divine the future, devising myriad ways to decipherand even controlthe mysterious workings of fate. The details of these fortunetelling practices have been kept closely guarded through the ages. Now they are revealed in one comprehensive illustrated volume. The Book of Divination leads readers on a fascinating exploration of the great divinatory practices of the Western worldfrom astrology and tarot to haruspicy (not advised for the squeamish: this is divination by the reading of animal entrails). With wry humor and explanations clearer than a crystal ball, author Ann Fiery recounts the remarkable histories of these various occult systems and explains how each method is used. Brimming with fabulous illustrations from ancient texts and little-known art collections, The Book of Divination illuminates the essential secrets of these esoteric practices for the modern-day seeker.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In The Book of Divination the histories and descriptions of 15 systems of divination are overviewed from a pop cultural perspective by researcher Ann Fiery. In terms dismissive of her subject area (the first illustration is a reproduction of a painting of fortunetellers picking the pocket of a rich man), Fiery touches upon astrology, metoposcopy (the science of forehead lines), oracles, numerology, oneiromancy (dream reading), phrenology (the study of head shapes), alchemy, tasseomancy (tea leaf reading), runes, haruspicy (reading the entrails of animals), talismans, chiromancy (palmistry), geomancy, rhabdomancy (dowsing), and tarot in her wide sweep. The shining gold cover, fine bindery, handsome illustrations, and interior graphic design also make this an attractive work of bookmaking art. --P. Randall Cohan

If you hope to become a great diviner, you must first accept what the cards or stars or lines reveal about your own character and future. Only after you have followed their guidance can you become an adept yourself. from the Introduction

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning point, February 10, 2000
By
This review is from: The Book of Divination (Hardcover)
This book is an ok overview work of the various types of divination that have been employed by man. Areas touched on include: Astrology, Numerology, Runes, Tasseomancy, Oneiromancy,Haruspicy, Tarot, Chiromancy, Geomancy, Phrenology, Metoposcopy and a few others. The treatment is brief, and should serve strictly as an overview. Don't expect anything in depth in any of these chapters. Well illustrated and nice picture plates. Light reading, nothing heavy. Good for party banter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely Love this book!, November 22, 1999
By
This review is from: The Book of Divination (Hardcover)
Beautifully illustrated with rich vintage images and gorgeous symbols of divination, this new title kept me enthralled for hours, browsing through the Astrology signs, working up my personal numerology, and learning about Tarot. I was shocked to see such a low price in this age of $60 coffee table books for something I could really use and find so visually captivating. Not only is The Book of Divination a great find for myself but I recommend it to everyone who reads their horoscope or wonders how the future tells you its secrets!
