About the Author

Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I haven't actually read the whole book, but I believe that a description is necessary. I don't like browsing kindle books and not being able to know if I might want to read or not based on the reviews and the description. From the little I have read, the book tells stories about ghosts but not ghost stories. It's not about horror stories, just tells about people who saw a ghost and what they did... Anyway, here is a description I took from the paper back version:

A bocan was not the only inhabitant of the spirit-world that Donald Ban encountered during his lifetime. A cousin of his mother was said to have been carried off by the fairies, and one night Donald saw him among them, dancing away with all his might. -from "Donald's Hymn" Not merely an assortment of spooky ghost stories suitable for a foggy Halloween night-though it is certainly that as well-this is a history of the ghost story told from the perspectives of mythology and anthropology. Written by one of the late 19th century's foremost experts on folklore and first published in 1897, this is an early scientific study of the occult that features some of the best-documented ghost stories from the history of humanity. The chilling case studies examine:
.the deathbed of Louis XIV
.the restraining hand
.the wraith of the czarina
.Sir George Villiers' ghost
.the slaying of Sergeant Davies
.the dream that knocked at the door
.the lady in black
.the dancing devil
.and many, many more.

I chose this title because of the author. It was fascinating to read Andrew Lang's "other" interests (besides folk and fairy tales). This read a bit dry and was not "stories," but mindset of the day and retellings of actual sightings and events of people in the late 1800's and earlier. There was nothing spooky about it, as it was written very matter-of-factly. Interesting, but not a quick read. Curious people and thoughtful (thinking) people who wonder about such things could benefit from its contents.

I thought that it was an interesting read with lots of good information.
I could read it and put it down and decide to pick it up later.
