This is not the first "how to" book on creating jewelry with inexpensive or scrap materials. It is, however, one of the few to show how to make stylish jewelry that in no way betrays its humble origins. The 40 projects included were commissioned from a number of British designers and use easily obtainable tools and materials, including polymer clays, meltable plastic, buttons, fabrics, and paper to fashion all variety of pieces, from quilled filigree jewelry to a millefiori necklace to a captivating "ostrich brooch" made from sheet tin. Instructions for each piece include a list of materials and close-up illustrations of each step of the creative process. Once initial projects are completed, photographs of additional pieces using the same techniques may inspire readers to design their own unique jewelry. Highly recommended for public libraries.

This book is not for the first time jewelry-maker. Some of the projects require power tools and have long materials lists. On the positive side, there are step-by-step instructions with pictures. Also, a wide variety of jewelry techniques and types of beads are shown. The "Treasures for Free" section is a good idea that I haven't seen in any other jewelry-making book. So, the benefit of this book will depend upon how experienced you are and how well-equiped your workshop is. Therefore, I think this book is best as a secondary source for most people.

I picked this book up at the library, and found it interesting, but not spectacular. Some very creative ideas and novel techniques; especially how to make millefiori beads from polymer clay. I'd say I would actually make and wear about 50% of the items.
