Book Description

July 2003
Visionary apocalyptic painter Joe Coleman explores in excruciating detail his fascination with the junctions between saint and sinner, sacred and profane, holy and horrifying, as shown in this book's full-color plates. Using a single-hair brush and jeweler's magnifying lenses, Coleman packs his canvases with hallucinatory detail. Legendary in the world of lowbrow art, his work shows the technical skill of Robert Williams and the subject matter of a serial killer's dreams: terrifying and beautiful at once.

More About the Author

I am a (recovering) artist, author, editor, designer and curator. Through my company Gates of Heck, Inc, I co-created books with Annie Sprinkle and Joe Coleman; and published books by Maurice Vellekoop, Steven Cerio, Malcolm McKesson, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, Art Spiegelman, Caryl Burtner and others. I am probably best known for my research into non-conformist sexual subcultures, but I also write about and work with artists whose work interests me.

I am currently working on a YA novel, of all things, that will have very little to do with kinks -- at least in any obvious way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joe Coleman Catalogue Raissone - At Last, September 29, 2004
By
Rebecca Lieb (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Book of Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman (Hardcover)
A number of fine books on Joe Coleman's work exist, but none offer the scope, detail and production quality of "The Book of Joe." Joe's work has long merited a volume that not only reproduces nearly every painting he's produced, but offers readers highly-magnified details of the paintings. Even for those lucky enough to view his work firsthand (you pretty much have to know someone - the work is rarely exhibited publicly, and still more rarely can you see more than one painting at a time), these details elude the naked eye.

In addition to previously unpublished work, The Book of Joe is also a tour through the painter's life, loves, friends, performances and, of course, the infamous Odditorium.

This is an important book about an important painter. And it's as deep into Joe Coleman's mind as anyone's likely to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visionary work of a true artistic savant, September 7, 2011

This review is from: The Book of Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman (Hardcover)
This is my favorite Art Book from the visionary mind of Joe Coleman. Real horror creeps within. Real beauty bleeds between the pages of this fantastic collection of the best of Joe's amazing art. 5 star recommendation. The work inside these covers represent a sampling of one of the most original and unique artists alive today. Mr Coleman is the master of exquisite detail, he sees and imparts the beauty and horror of life warts 'n' all. This book will add another level to your collection and will shake up what you thought you knew about everything.
