The New International Commentary on the Old Testament is a conservative and scholarly treatment of the sciptures. This volume on Joshua by M.H. Woudstra begins with an introductory section which discusses the authorship, date, unity and theology of the book. The commentary is an in- depth analysis of the text based on linguistic and historical research. A good work for scholars.

A helpful overview of Joshua by a respected authority. Generally helpful on some troublesome passages with good exegesis. The only drawback was that it didn't really deal with some of the questions that I personally--and I presume other pastors--would have liked a broader treatment on. Woudstra does not have a fondness for higher criticism, a factor that too often pervades many commentaries on Joshua. His is a solid if not sterling commentary.
