Fantasy and Christianity; A hard fence to straddle,
By
This review is from: The Book of the King (The Wormling) (Paperback)
Trying to add to the church library, I was curious about this series of books. We have found ourselves in a two party camp of those who love Harry Potter and see nothing wrong with the fantasy novels and the others who feel that magic and Christianity don't have a place together.
As the Youth Director I would love to have something to offer my kids and feel good about the options. The Book of the Kings does have some mythical creatures and mysterious people who are not of our human world. There is clear symbolism of The Book of Kings and the Bible and the more the hero reads and knows the stronger he becomes. The true test came from the kids. They were excited to read and want more novels as soon as I can get them. The parents were happy to see the kids interest in something other than HP. The hero, Owen Reeder, is a loveable character who feels alien in his everday life. Isn't that how every kid feels? It was nice to have a Christian novel to be able to offer to our church kids. The book holds your interest and is a fun light read. It's nice to have alternatives. If this was a food I would say it was a nice Sugar Free substitute. I will be reading the rest of the series to see what happens to Owen.

Great Book, Must Read,
This review is from: The Book of the King (The Wormling) (Paperback)
The book was slow in the beginning but it was necessary to set the story. It was awesome and very hard to put it down. It is a must read for anyone who loves heroes and loves to see good win over evil. I read the first three books in one weekend. I gave it to my daughter (age 11) to read and she loved them. It is also a mystery that you cant wait to see unravel. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy and mystery.

The Book of the King is an amazing book. It is about a young boy's struggle as an outcast who discovers a past he never knew about. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy with a biblical twist. It is a thriller and you will never be able to put it down.

Magical Read for Christians,

This review is from: The Book of the King (The Wormling) (Kindle Edition)
As a homeschooling Mom, I'm always looking for books for my son, who reads about as avidly as I do. When I found this book, I bought the whole series for my son for Christmas 2 years ago. I read them myself right away, and found them a bit weak in the writing, but the story was fairly good. (No Harry Potter, to be sure)
But then this summer, my son, now 11 read them. HE LOVED THEM! He read the whole series straight through in about a week. He couldn't get enough of them, liking them better than Harry Potter. Well, there's no accounting for taste, but it is what it is.

I had gotten this book for my son for Christmas in 2008. He hasn't read it yet but I just recently finished it. I have to say I enjoyed it. I am a Christian and I am also a fan of Harry Potter, to which this book has been compared by genre. It was actually very good and it was intriguing. The main character, Owen Reeder, whose name is symbolic becomes an unlikely hero, just as in the Harry Potter series. He rises to the challenge however and is ready for each new adventure. The parallels to the Bible are pretty obvious although I supposed for someone who has not been exposed to Christianity it all they may not be so easy to spot. This is first and foremost a book about good and evil (as was Harry Potter whether you agree with the magical setting or not.) There is magic in this series as well although it seems to be object oriented rather than people oriented.
All in all this was a very good book. Young readers and anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter series would enjoy reading this book. I am looking forward to reading books 3-5 in the series. I have a suspicion as to the ending but I'm not positive so the author has kept me guessing, which is a good thing as that is what a book series is supposed to do. This would definitely be a good book to have on a Christian bookshelf, at a youth group or a young people's book club. As a teacher I wonder if I could get away with using this in a public school to help struggling readers as they might find the book interesting.

Captivating Christian Fiction,

This review is from: The Book of the King (The Wormling) (Paperback)
The Book of the King was an incredible book that I enjoyed very much. The story line was great and suspenseful.
This book was centered around a battle between Owen and a dragon. Owen prepares throughout the book to fight the dragon. At the end of the book, Owen prevails and the book ends happily ever after. I felt The Book of the King is comparable to the Harry Potter Series and I would recommend it to any person who likes the fantasy genre. By Kimmy Ruch(The King's Academy) |
