Thank you Gordon Wenham!

Leviticus has always been obtuse to me. Not so anymore. Wenham's clear, even lively discussion of Leviticus has brought it to life for me.

This commentary on Leviticus limits itself to a scholarly and fairly objective explanation of the biblical text, which is desirable in a commentary. Wenham's commentary is a useful commentary on Leviticus where conservative scholars are rare indeed. This book contains one of the most powerful discussions on the meaning of sin that I have ever read. Wenham has cleared up not only the fuzziness I had about not only Leviticus, but about several issues in my life.

This commentary is priceless. I recommend it most highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to Love Leviticus, December 4, 2002
I mentioned to a pastor friend of mine that I was doing my daily devotions in the Book of Leviticus. As would be expected from one of the uninitiated, I got a look that said "you've got to be kidding."

People are under the mistake belief that because we are "no longer under the law," the Old Testament is no longer relevant to our daily lives as Christians. This is where Gordon Wenham's book comes in.

Wenham's commentary has opened this otherwise ponderous book in a way that I never dreamed imaginable. Truly all scripture is profitable!

Wenham has a way of extracting the spiritual nugget out of the law that is applicable to us. While we do not earn our salvation, nor could we ever do anything to merit Eternal Life, G-d is still a holy G-d, and it is written in both Old and New Testaments "Be ye holy, for I am holy."

Read Leviticus, by Gordon Wenham and see how this all fits into the big picture of "Christ in you, the hope of glory."

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Leviticus readable, May 2, 2000
By
If you've ever tried to read the Bible from beginning to end you may well have got stuck in Leviticus. It is largely a collection of the Old Testament law and difficult for modern readers to come to terms with. This commentary will make a huge difference. I now look forward to working on this particular Old Testament book. Wenham takes the material and shows clearly how it fits together. He also demonstrates the links between it and the New Testament. While the commentary contains some technical language, even the non theologically trained will find it helpful for understanding Leviticus. For preachers, or those leading Bible Studies, thinking about looking at Leviticus this commentary is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Ye Holy for God is Holy, April 26, 2010

Excellent! This is a good resource by an astute Old Testament Scholar. At the end of each biblical chapter there is a New Testament discussion in how the passages could apply for the Church or Christians. Also, it starts with a great Theological Introduction of the Book of Leviticus. Although I'm an advocate of Eternal Security, I am not offended by the inspiration to live Holy. Grace Produces Holiness and Godliness

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Help on Leviticus, October 26, 2011

It's hard to say things that haven't been said already. Overall, Wenham has written an insightful and readable treatment of what is regarded as some of the driest reading in the bible. His discussions on sacrifice in particular were especially helpful in making Leviticus come to life. One of the major strengths of this commentary is the fact that Wenham actually takes the time to factor in New Testament connections with these passages. IMHO, this is something that is much needed but sadly overlooked in most scholarly OT commentaries. Wenham did not address every question of interest I had, but the information he does give made this book worth the money.

Whether you are just looking for an introduction to Leviticus or whether you are revisiting it, this is definitely one of the most important and accessible books to consult for study of Leviticus.

Intermediate level of study. The best commentary on Leviticus by far. A fascinating and insightful look into Leviticus by the gentleman who gave us the excellent two-volume commentary on Genesis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Conservative Commentary on Leviticus, April 18, 2001

This review is from: Book of Leviticus (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) (Hardcover)
Since sacrifice and clean/unclean is such a prominent part of the Christian faith, this book is critical.

Wenham unloads the rich content of God's giving the requirements for correct worship and sacrifice. This set's the scene for the New Covenant worship and sacrifice.

Prefiguring Christ's work and sacrifice, Wenham sees this work as substantial to the holiness of God and the holiness demanded of each who comes before his presence.

Highly recommended to the student of OT and Leviticus.

This is one of the best commentaries I have ever read. It is a helpful resource in helping the reader to understand the nature of sin and the need for holiness among God's covenant people, who have been called to be a Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Naiton.

This commentary on Leviticus limits itself to a scholarly and fairly objective explanation of the biblical text, which is desirable in a commentary. Wenham's commentary is a useful commentary on Leviticus where conservative scholars are rare indeed. Especially helpful are Wenham's comments and insights about the Old Testament sacrificial system and its significance. Unfortunately, concerning salvation, Wenham leaves room for the understanding that a person contributes somehow to his justification. Nonehteless, a very good text--especially considering what else is available--but not outstanding.
