Employing a delicate blend of theory and practical advice, this book shows how to engage adolescent learners with literature and help them assume increased responsibility for their own learning. Quality literature forms the foundation of the program. Students receive strategy instruction, write in response to the literature, and learn to participate in meaningful peer discussions. Carefully modeled on classroom research, the program provides specific examples and detailed lesson plans. Produced by Small Planet Communications

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Book Club started over twelve years ago with the goal of creating an alternative context for reading instruction -- one that would get students excited about reading and discussing books. We began by developing the program in upper elementary classrooms. Since those early days, Book Club's combination of excellent literature, relevant writing activities, and student-led discussion groups have proven effective in classroom after classroom.

Our success with elementary students prompted us to bring Book Club to other age groups. Middle school students are ideal Book Club candidates for a variety of reasons -- they enjoy talking with their peers, they're ready and eager to grapple with abstract ideas and real-world issues, and there's a wealth of excellent adolescent fiction written just for them. "Book Club for Middle School" will help both beginning and experienced teachers implement Book Club in their middle level classrooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!, October 19, 2006

This is a great resource that I came across at a summer conference... and have actually used (unlike so many resources we teachers pick up along the way). I read this guide book twice over the summer and used it to apply to the first book my middle school class would be reading. I began implementing my newly created lessons and book club framework on the first day of school. It's been great! The book has several chapters on general recommendations and then provides two very detailed units (Lowry's The Giver and a multi-book unit on civil rights). Using the general info and the specifics of these two units you can adapt the info to any book you might decide to teach. The back of the book has lots of "Think Sheets" that you will use when teaching your kids to facilitate their student-led book clubs. And did I mention that I teach students with behavior disorders in a special education class... and that these students are frequently 2-4 grade levels behind in reading? Even under these circumstances I found this book to be an engaging read & fun to implement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used for a Library Science Class in College, July 26, 2004
By
This review is from: Book Club for Middle School (Paperback)
I used this for a Library Science class in college and found it a wonderfully helpful book. For the class were were required to read many adolescent books and then use the Book Club Text as a guide on how to develop literature circles and lesson plans. I especially enjoyed the chapter on The Giver by Lois Lowry. Of course, I am relatively new to the teaching guide books, so there might be many other books that are even more helpful.
