Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The Book of Mules is the essential new resource for anyone who owns or rides a mule, is intrigued by the idea, or is otherwise a proud—perhaps even mulish—devotee of such creatures in a largely horse-centered world.

The offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, mules are known for their grace, strength, agility, and lovely long ears. With both charm and intelligence, these hardy, sure-footed creatures have a longtime association with the American West and a dedicated following that comes as no surprise to those who enjoy riding and driving them. There are some 275,000 mules in America today, and Mule Day festivals take place nationwide.

In this book, Donna Campbell Smith addresses the origin, history, and breeding of mules, and provides clear and invaluable information on selecting, caring for, riding, and showing them. She lists events, discusses health care, and provides a useful glossary, resource list, and bibliography. In short, this concise introduction covers practically everything you ever wanted to know about mules.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better for beginners, March 23, 2009
This review is from: The Book of Mules: Selecting, Breeding, and Caring for Equine Hybrids (Hardcover)
This is not a bad book, but I was disappointed because it did not seem to contain information specific to mules (vs. horses/other equines). I am a horse owner of 10 years and I found the information to be elementary for anyone already caring for horses. It would be helpful to anyone looking to get into mules or any other equine for the first time. I just think the title misrepresents the contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mule Mom, August 18, 2009
This review is from: The Book of Mules: Selecting, Breeding, and Caring for Equine Hybrids (Hardcover)
Recently purchased and fell in love with two mules that were living in less than perfect conditions. I have never been around mules and have very little knowledge of them. The information in this book has taught our family the correct way to care for these wonderful animals. Knowing the history of them has helped us understand their personalities and has made us love them more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, January 20, 2009
This review is from: The Book of Mules: Selecting, Breeding, and Caring for Equine Hybrids (Hardcover)
An excellent book for both the new mule owner & the experienced owner. The pictures & text are very helpful and the instructions are clearly written. Shannon Hoffman's input was great, as well as all the photos she provided to the author.

The book is especially dear to me since I now own the mule, Shiloh, who's photos appear in the book!
