Fun with old favorites,
This review is from: The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes and Children's Songs (Paperback)
One hundred and sixty-nine songs offer lots of enjoyment. I loved finding old campfire songs and folk tunes as well as game and activity rhymes. It is a big book that is a bit hard to make lie flat but after being bent back enough times that problem is solved.
Some of my old favorites are Dry Bones, Pop Goes The Weasel, The Farmer in the Dell, and The Wheels On The Bus.

My kids just love it, especially after our babysitter taught them the songs. The 5-year old one likes this book very much and always sings some songs from the book. The 2-year old one likes to hum along. I am sure in the future after they starts his music lessons and knows more about the notes. They will love it more.

an okay book,

I bought this about 8 months ago so that my husband and I could sing to our baby. We find it to be a little off target for us. There are some songs that are good -- many verses to Mary Had a Little Lamb or Camp Town Ladies. But then there are songs that only include 1 verse (Skip to my Lou or There's A Hole in the Bucket or the mockingbird song) or there is a tune put to mother goose nursery rhymes that we learned as poems not songs (Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat or Humpty Dumpty). There are songs that have lyrics that differ from the US traditional lyrics (A Ring-A-Ring O'Roses instead of Ring Around the Rosey). There are songs that have different tunes than the ones we learned as kids (My Hat It Has 3 Corners). There are a couple of real American traditional songs (Dry Bones, Yankee Doodle) but it is missing all of the old West songs like Goodbye Old Paint or Git Along Little Doggies (one of the yipee ki-yo songs). It's not a bad book and we use it almost daily. The paper and binding are good quality and are holding up even when the baby gets her paws on it. However, every song is listed as traditional and with only one or two exceptions the copyrights are all listed as Dorsey Brothers Limited, 2004. A cynical person might come to the conclusion that songs are missing verses or have slightly changed tunes or lyrics because the publisher didn't want to deal with rights and fees.

Nice Collection of Songs,
By A Reader (Steinbach, Hessen Germany) - See all my reviews

This is a nice collection of classic children's songs and nursery rhymes. Some of the arrangements could be a little more interesting, and I find the book hard to keep open when I play the piano for my son.

This is a terrific book with all the classic nursery rhymes and songs, with very simple music to follow along on the piano or just to sing. Most other books I've seen have a much smaller selection of tunes and the music is more complicated. It makes a great gift as well - I found that a lot of new parents are looking for something other than 'Twinkle Twinkle' and 'The Wheels on the Bus...' to sing to and with their children :-)

Great for people who are musical,
By Valerie "Val" (England) - See all my reviews

I prefer rhymes to songs, and like to read rather than sing. Mum say that my voice is fine but rather loud when I sing. Anyway for my friend, Amantha who can play the piano and is musical this book is great. I like the rhymes and have enjoyed it, but it is not at the top of my list. Valerie.

So many great songs for us to play to our new baby. Very happy with the book. A great present for any musical mum or dad!

Great songbook,

This book delivers as promised. The chords are straight-forward (nothing too tricky) and the number and variety of songs is great. I would recommend this book to any parent who possesses a little guitar or piano background.
I've played the guitar for a while, but I am by no means an accomplished player. The chords chosen for each song are very basic and provide a safe guide for improvising something more intricate, if desired. This book is a steal for the price. |
