5.0 out of 5 stars Blessed is the reader..., November 15, 2003
This review is from: The Book of Psalms: In the Authorized Version (Hardcover)
This volume is a small gem. It contains all 150 Psalms in the Authorised (King James) Version, laid out in spectacular format, as if this were a medieval manuscript cross-bred with a modern printed book. Illuminations appear on every page, as the first letter of each psalm, in addition to the occasional frontpiece from the ornately decorated pages of other manuscripts.

For example, in Psalm 40, whose first word is 'I', the 'I' extends the full length of the page.

I waited patiently for the Lord,
and he inclined unto me,
and heard my cry.

Within the decorations of the 'I' are the scenes from salvation history -- Noah's Ark, the Ten Commandments being given, etc. This particular illumination comes from the Winchester Bible, circa 1175 AD/CE. There is a brief listing at the conclusion giving credits for all the illuminations (alas, some are missing dates, and it is organised alphabetically rather than in page order, making identification a bit of a chore).

In a format under 5 inches x 8 inches, it fits perfectly in the hand for use for personal study and for reading aloud. The binding is very sturdy, and there is a strong cloth cover that resists wear and tear. Every page has colour, and the serif font selection and size make reading easy. I use this for my regular Saturday chaplain service at the retirement home -- the use of the KJV coupled with the interesting illuminations delight the listeners.

There is no commentary here, not even so much as an introduction. The Psalms speak for themselves, together with the beautiful, intricate and often-times cleverly devised illuminations.

This is a lovely book for a gift, for private devotions, and for corporate worship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Psalter, March 4, 2003

This review is from: The Book of Psalms: In the Authorized Version (Hardcover)
I had been looking for a nice psalter to function as a sort of book of hours and this edition of the Book of Psalms was exaclty what I wanted. It's a nice size - only slightly larger than an average paperback - and each psalm begins with a large, illuminated letter taken from a medieval manuscript. These manuscripts are cited in a short, simple form at the very end of the text. Although not all of the citations contain dates, the source manuscripts seem to range from the 10th through the 16th centuries. All in all a beautiful copy of the psalter for anyone who is interested in medieval manuscripts.

This is a wonderful Psalm collection. The illustration at the beginning of each Psalm is exquisite. Besides my own copy, I recently bought another copy to give as a wedding anniversary gift. The illustrations alone lift the spirit. Jean Rhoads, Bloomington IN

A lovely edition of the Psalter, this is the text of the King James (Authorized) Version, with illuminated, ornate capitals for every psalm from medieval manuscripts, as well as some full-page illustrations, also from the same period. Until opening my copy of this book, I had not read KJV for many years; something about this combination of text and imagery adorns and beautifies the old language. A wonderful gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness, August 2, 2010

This review is from: The Book of Psalms: In the Authorized Version (Hardcover)
If you have a Bible in your house, then of course you have the Psalms of David. You could read a Psalm every day from your Bible - but you probably don't! This beautiful edition of The Book of Psalms will encourage you to pick up the Psalms and read them because the beauty of the book itself matches the beauty of the Psalms.

Throughout the Old Testament and church history up until the time of the Reformation, the Psalms have been one of the most important books in the Bible to Christians. The church has not only read the Psalms but used them as her hymn book. They touch the soul, feed it, and train it for God's Kingdom.

So what makes this version so special? I like the fact that it's small (only 7 ½ x 4 ½ inches) because it's easy to carry around (although you wouldn't want to put it in your pocket even if you could). The translation is the King James Version, the version from which some of the most memorized verses of the Bible come from. The way most of us learned Psalm 23, for example, is from the King James Version.

The best feature of the book, by far, is the illumination. From the time you pick up this book you get the feeling that you're holding an illuminated manuscript. Every Psalm has a large colored illuminated initial letter, and some pages are filled entirely with a colored illumination. These illuminations come from actual illuminated manuscripts (whose sources are conveniently listed at the end of the book). Some of these illuminations are of David's coronation, David's anointment, David playing the harp for Saul, and my favorite - David parading around with Goliath's severed head on a stick.

This book motivates me to want to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! It would make an excellent gift - even to yourself!
