Book Description

August 11, 2005
Pop artist David Shrigley's work is immediate, sometimes rude, and very funny, "like a psychotic version of Matt Groening's 'Life in Hell' cartoons" (The Guardian). His darkly brilliant, addictively hilarious scrawls from the subconscious have already made him a star in the UK, with a growing legion of fans around the globe. The Book of Shrigley is the most extensiveand the first widely availableshowcase of his edgy but accessible off-kilter vision. Here are bad-tempered pets, strange attractions, work, S-E-X, knitting, wrestling, and a host of other everyday activities, dangers, and amusements laid bare in Shrigley's urgently illustrated panels and wickedly mischievous punch lines. Made up of almost entirely new work and bursting with color and unsettlingly funny truths, The Book of Shrigley is the ideal introduction to this comic genius and the book fans have been waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ironically sincere., June 24, 2010
By
P.S. Woods "pswoods" (Kansas City, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Book of Shrigley (Paperback)
The book itself is beautiful. It has wonderful touches like an essay pad binding and a cheap diary-style cloth bookmark. The art itself is presented without the usual, maddening interference of a curator. It's just page after page of art, presented as a journal. It is hilarious, smart, and beautiful. The irony of this title is that while it is an avant-garde pop art project, the air is refreshingly clean of the smug, hipper-than-thou self-awareness that attends most of this type of art. It is a gem of a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Shrigley's better books, February 15, 2009
This review is from: The Book of Shrigley (Paperback)
Need a good intro to Shrigley's work? Get this one. Priced right. It feels good in your hand. And its full of classic good SHrigley pieces. Yes, there's a few short essays about Shrigley in there. They're unneccessary, ignorable. But Shrigley's work is excellent, and you will enjoy picking this one up and browsing pretty frequently. Don't have any books by Shrigley yet? Get this one. And if you already like him and don't have this one yet, get it as well.
