Not as good as other Kumon workbooks,
By Doda McCheesle "Doda" (NY, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
I have brought all of the Kumon workbooks. Most of the other workbooks are full of bright colorful pictures with lessons containing just the right amount of sit down work. That is not true with this book. It is just pages full of problems -- too many of them for one sitting. They call it simple, because you are only adding 1 to numbers 1 to 29, but it is a bit much for a child trying to learn this for the first time. The book is fine for speed improvements, but find a different book for first time learners.

Builds Confidence,
This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
Excellent book to help young children learning basic addition skills. We started this book when my son was 4 years, 8 months. The going was slow for a while, but now we are more than halfway through the book, and I no longer have to guide him on every step. Prior to this book, he had not spent a lot of time learning to write his numbers (this was his first numbers workbook), and now he can write his number 1-29 without help.
For the reviewer who mentioned the pages were full of too many math problems for one sitting, I agree. We improvise, and I divide each page in half with a marker. He gets a sticker for each half-page he completes. Most importantly, my son's confidence has dramatically improved. When we began the book, he was unsure of himself and easily confused by the many numbers, but time and patience has won out--and he races to get his book now.

I just love the Kumon workbooks because they are so well organized, with pages that are simply laid out and they introduce the information incrementally. It appeals to the learning style of my five year old. I was a tiny bit disappointed by how extremely simple this workbook is. It only covers adding 1 and 2 to the numbers 1 through 29. It says it right there on the cover but somehow I missed it. I would say it's definitely pre-school level and not kindergarten as I'd hoped. I'll probably just do a few of the pages with my five year old and order the next book to do this year with her and let my four year old use this when I need her to have busy-work. The information builds very slowly in this workbook and so it might not be ideal of the child who likes variety in their workbook pages or who struggles with being under-challenged or gets bored really quickly. However for my daughter this will be perfect.

Adding Numbers by 1 and 2,
This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
This was basically just a book of addition drills, adding 1 and 2 to numbers 1 through 29.
Each page is broken down into small groups, like adding 1 to numbers 1 through 5, then 6 through 10, etc. After each section, there is a review page, so you will know right away whether or not your child is ready for the next section. At 4 yrs old, this was very easy for my child to finish. I think the age group should be 3-4-5, rather than 4-5-6. Since it is just drilling, we were careful not to do do too much in one sitting, or my son would get bored quickly. The repetition was also great practice for writing numbers. My child was able to write neater, smaller numbers by the time he finished the workbook.

Excellent for pre-schoolers and as a refresher for those about to begin kindergarten,

This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
My husband and I have been working on reading and math with our daughter who is to begin kindergarten this fall. When I purchased this book, I thought it would involve more than what it actually is, but that's my mistake as I did not read the description. The front cover clearly states this book focuses on adding numbers 1 and 2 to the numbers 1 through 29. I had expected more than this as my daughter is already familiar with these numbers and concepts, but like I said, this is my mistake. That being said, this is an excellent refresher course and a great beginning math book for preschoolers.
The book starts off with some basic tracing and fill in the numbers type exercises but this is followed up with drill type exercises of addition. It makes for great practice. Another winner from Kumon.

My daughter just started taking KUMON classes,
This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
and only now I understand the idea of this (and other) Kumon book which is 1st and for most the child should not be introduced to something randomly and together with other categories of the same subject. E.g. the child learns to count to 100 with literally no mistakes before they go farther and start adding 1 (no subtraction yet, see the guide on the back cover of the book). Trust me, if your child is confident with their numbers, they can master this book. DO NOT however skip any page of this book. The second believe of Mr. Kumon is repetition. By the time your child gets to the 6th page of the problems she will stop counting and will write the result automatically. My daughter could finish 1 page within less than 3 minutes by the time she was almost 4. However I would not recommend doing it for a longer period of time. Also you must do these exercises on a daily basis. If you do this 5-8 min a day with a 4 y.o. you will see incredible results within 3 months.

One Step At a Time,
This review is from: My Book Of Simple Addition (Paperback)
This is a good Kumon workbook. The ease with which this book builds slowly makes it just challenging enough to stretch our child but not overwhelm.
Even a child with dyscalculia can do this workbook without too much parental involement. It could overwhelm if you give too many pages at once. That is the only caution I'd give on this book. (I did see a recommendation when working with dyscalculia that you should do it in color. This helps engage both sides of the brain. Doing math in colored pencils makes it more fun anyway!)

Too much on one page.,

I agree with the other reviewer that this book has too many problems on a page. I had to draw lines between problems to help him remain in space and not lose track of the problem. A reward system for every half a page also helped to get through.

I bought this book for my daughter who is in Kindergarten. I think she got halfway through it before she realized she was going "Math Work". It really presents numbers in a fun way, lots of colors, with an easy to follow sequencing that builds on each skill as you go along. I am so happy to have her look forward to doing Math. Its a really great start to this subject.

My 4 year old initially did not wanted to read this book, but after little bit of effort and encouragement, he starting liking this book and now knows how to add simple 1 to 5, he is getting better every day, but seems to be a good book. I would recommend this to any one.
