Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Though it falls into the how-to-do-it category of books, this volume is equally valuable as a quick-reference source for the identification of common as a well as unusual tools, processes, and finished products. Plumbing and galvanized iron pipe, as well as the entire field of electrical installations, are excluded.

The greatest value of this book is in its abundance of excellent color illustrations, showing every kind of tool likely to be used in woodworking, metalworking, masonry, ceramics and glass, painting and wallcovering, and flooring--these being the six major topics in the book. The first 75 pages are filled with color illustrations of pliers, screwdrivers, vises, planes, trowels, and so on, while the next 35 pages illustrate hardware--nails, bolts, screws, hinges, brackets, etc.

The sections on woodworking and other projects give detailed instructions on the use of tools, with step-by-step illustrations where needed, and also offer hints on, for example, warming glue for use in rabbet joints. They also give practical advice on the use of tools (when using a spokeshave, "press with thumbs, leaving wrists loose").

Librarians who may not be too familiar with the use of a vernier caliper, or who readily admit that they cannot distinguish between a mortise-and-tenon joint and a rabbet-and-dado joint, fear no more. Hand this reference book to a patron and you've got a library friend for life. Every public library should have a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for the new handyman, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Skills and Tools (Family Handyman) (Hardcover)
This book is great for the novice handyman such as myself as it has great pictures of nearly every tool, bolt etc that one will ever come across. It has many step-by-step instructions for making anything from a brick pathway to a stonewall and they are very easy to understand. I recommend this book as a great present to anyone that wants to try his or her hand at any handyman jobs around the home.

5.0 out of 5 stars the how-to handy illustrated reference @ the top of the heap, August 12, 2001
By
This review is from: The Book of Skills and Tools (Family Handyman) (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book, made by and for those who love tools, craftsmanship, and doing it right the first time. As a former carpenter and general building and remodeling contractor, I've seen and read a lot of how-to books. I have to say, I am truly impressed at the breadth and depth and accuracy of this book, and as a bookseller by trade now, I have to say this is one book that is staying in my own personal library!

The photos are excellent, the illustrations superb, the explanations clear and understandable. Buy two, one for your workshop, and one for your library...and maybe an extra to loan your neighbor or father-in-law, so that you don't have to part with your own copy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, April 20, 2004
This review is from: The Book of Skills and Tools (Family Handyman) (Hardcover)
The title really does sum up the book. However, in the attempt to cover both aspects of a broad topic the book fails to cover either aspect in depth.

You do get color pictures of many tools and hardware products, although the focus is on tools and products used for home repair or remodeling. Additionally nearly all of the skills covered focus on home repair and remodeling.

I find that other books from Reader's digest give better coverage of home repair and remodeling. Although possibly useful for a novice, I find that the tool coverage is neither interesting nor exhaustive. The split personality and homeowner focus leaves this book with an average rating.
