Another greath mini-CD from Grammer and Henry,

This review is from: Book of Sparrows (Audio CD)
This is the third mini-CD from Tracy Grammer and Jim Henry (the second ONE HORSE TOWN was helmed by Jim Henry and released under his name). These mini-CDs are short and lightly produced. I really enjoy the scaled down productions as they remind me of the live versions of these songs (which were of course normally performed with Dave Carter, and after his death Donny Wright and later Jim Henry).
It includes two Dave Carter songs. GYSPY ROSE is a stripped down version of the song first released on FLOWER OF AVALON whereas LORD OF THE BUFFALO was previously unreleased. Both are good songs and worth the price of the CD. Surprisingly what makes this CD stand out is that Grammer takes a classic Jackson Brown song and gives it a whole new life. IN THE SHAPE OF A HEART is the reason this CD is a must have for your music collection.

I am a recent fan of Tracy Grammer and Dave Carter and eagerly awaited her next effort. I was somewhat disappointed that she doesn't really play the fiddle that much and that she included Gypsy Rose, a song which has been on other albums (although given what happened with Dave dying so young, perhaps this is their song). However, I love the sweetness of her voice and the compelling lyrics to her songs. On one of the songs the electric or steel guitar really overshadows the lyrics. I still play it over and over.

This is a great album, I found it because of Grammer's cover of Tom Russell's "Blue Wing" (and with respect to other performers, hers is the best cover of that amazing song -- I still feel it in my throat when I heat her sing the lines about "his fathers' fathers crossed that wild old Bering Sea"). My two favorites besides "Blue Wing" are "Gypsy Rose" and "lord of the Buffalo." But the whole album is strong. I wish she would perform in New York City!
