If every black pop artist since the 1970s had not been reimagined for the disco and "velvet soul" markets, we might be blessed with more bands like the Boneshakers. Is Randy Jacobs a better axe scratcher than he is a songwriter? That's a tough call, but you'd think that playing the tar out of original bluesy ballads and funky grooves would be enough. With his Strat up front and strings nowhere to be found, this project represents what might have been. If you want your funk without no junk, there's at least the Boneshakers.

A later incarnation of the Boneshakers featured Malford Milligan, the former vocalist of another overlooked rock/soul outfit, Storyville, but Jacobs re-formed the original lineup for 2005.

Why didn't this band make it? Every track on this album is an instant classic. I saw these guys in '97 at the North Star Bar in Philly and they just rocked! Bought this CD on the spot and it's one of my favorites. It's a rare R&B album that you can listen to from wall to wall and there isn't a bad track. So why did this band vanish without a trace? I think it was a case of bad timing. R&B and funk (this CD is a great combination of both) fell out of favor in the 90's and hasn't really gotten it's due since. These guys were a decade or so late to the party!
Check out their cover of "Cold Sweat". My favorite interpretation of this classic, combining funk/R&B/soul with rollicking Texas roadhouse worthy of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I was amazed to see these guy's @ Moe's Alley New Years Eve, 3 piece, and they rocked, sounded like the whole production was there. Sweet Pea, Randy, what a team, if you like R&B you gotta get this CD.. Can't wait to see them again.. Keep on, keeping on.

Or something like that. There are certainly touches of heavy HENDRIX / SRV guitars on this cd, but it is mainly about the GROOVE and the SONGS. And what GROOVE and SONGS they are. With the formidable vocals of SWEET PEA ATKINSON and the stupendous guitar work ( some amazing solos ) of RANDY JACOBS this has immediately become my favourite SOUL / R & B cd. This is a stunning hybrid between heavy BLUES / ROCK and pure SOUL. IRRESISTABLE !!!!!!
P.S. had to order WAS NOT WAS and RANDY JACOBS solo stuff straight away and can't wait to hear more from this amazing duo.

If you were to form a band with James Brown and Otis Redding singing, add Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray and Steve Cropper on guitar they migth sound like this band. They have the chops and the Chahones to cover "Cold Sweat", it's very impressive. SweetPea Atkinson of Was Not Was and Bonnie Riatt fame provides the vocals and Randy Jacobs provides searing guitar work with impeccable grace and style. BUY IT!!!

Sweetpea Atkinson is all I really needed to read on the cover. This guys voice just drips soul, blues and wherever those two came from. The tunes are great and Randy Jacobs is a guitar virtuoso adding a rockish dimension to the R&B. Very danceable and great album.
