5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud funny
I laughed aloud several times when reading this book. As the previous reviewer indicated, this book indeed references death--specifically, death by ravenous book. However, if I had children, I would have no problem giving them this book to read (though I would caution them if they hear the book's tummy rumbling).

I should also note that the illustrations...

2.0 out of 5 stars This book scares children
This book scared the living daylights out of my seven year old daughter. She was hyperventilating and terrorized and could not sleep. Not for the faint of heart. I am glad we got it from the library and did not actually buy it. This one is going back ASAP.

Would likely be considered very funny by older elementary kids.

I should also note that the illustrations are absolutely fantastic, and worth looking at closely because the page designs have lots of subtle jokes in them.

Definitely buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from www.firrkids.com, August 12, 2009
This review is from: The Book That Eats People (Hardcover)
This is a very different sort of book. A mean, nasty, no-good people eating type. Honest. This book eats humans, and is not particular about its diet. It likes children, librarians and security guards - people of all sizes and nationality.

You will need to be very cautious with this book. Oh, you'll want to read it. You be intrigued once you see those slanty eyes and that crooked mouth, not to mention the police tape of a title! And gosh, this book surely wouldn't eat YOU, would it? Well, it might. But you can move pretty fast if you need to, right? So go ahead, ignore the beware stamp and crack open that shiny red cover.

First of all, this book is always hungry. If books had tummies, this one would be growling. Sammy Ruskin from Arkansas made the fatal error of touching this book with fresh peanut butter on his fingers. He's a goner. And it attacked sweet Victoria Glassford, the girl with eyes as round as marbles, whose hair gleamed like butter. If this book could attack a doll like that, you better believe it would eat YOU right up!

This is a bad book with teeth and claws, always hungry for the human touch. Worst of all, it has a way of being engaging and clever that makes humans hungry for it! Best be extra careful and steer clear of this fabulous read. Don't be swayed by the bright illustrations and funny text. Be safe and pick up a boring book about fairies and bunnies instead, not this tantalizing, toothed tale.

The Book that Eats People didn't eat me. Perhaps I'm too old and tough. But it didn't eat my daughter either, so it must be full. For now. This is a fun and different book, with colorful and detailed illustrations and well-thought-out text. It was suitable for our 2 year old, who likes it, and I would think older children would enjoy it even more. Well worth a purchase!

I bought this book for my 2-year-old and we both love it. I'm a little tired of books reminding me to wash my hands and be nice. This was fun and we had a good time reading it. Come to think of it, this book does make you want to wash your hands... I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, November 30, 2009
This review is from: The Book That Eats People (Hardcover)
I am often asked to come into classrooms and read books to the 1st and 2nd graders, and this book has been the class favorite throughout the entire school. Our librarian said she can't keep a copy longer than an hour or two because there are too many kids on the reserve list. Even the 6th graders want to see the book for the illustrations. Funny, funny, funny. One of the best children's books I've ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll eat this up, October 16, 2009
This review is from: The Book That Eats People (Hardcover)
The age range for this book is four to eight years. The book is very funny, but you might find yourself having to explain the macabre to a child. The illustrations are cartoonish and go wonderfully with the clever dialogue. The book is very clever and works on several levels. Children will enjoy the anticipation of who the book will eat next! And they will enjoy rereading the book over and over, giggling all the while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously and Devilishly Different, November 23, 2009

This review is from: The Book That Eats People (Hardcover)
I purchased The Book That Eats People for my four year old son. Wisely he first approached the book with wariness. "It's a monster!" he exclaimed upon seeing the cover. But four year old boys love monsters. He often asks for "the story that eats you" or will climb into bed with me first thing in the morning, book in hand, impishly saying "let's eat people!" I think Mr. Perry may be a bad influence on my impressionable young lad, but he loves it. Being a very visual child, he adores the illustrations and every reading of the book includes spending time on each page pointing out the wonderful details contained in each picture. Any page that features the book looking particularly menacing elicits many giggles and exclamations of "It's gonna get me! It's gonna eat us!" I'm all for happiness and light and the tenderness in many children's books, but it does get treacly and tiresome. It's delightful to have such a smart, clever diversion. And yes, The Book That Eats People is indeed delightful. Highly, highly recommended.

This is such a fantastic book, my children love it! A funny story about a book that gets hungry. It's perfect for halloween. One of our favorites, funny and quirky. The description of how the book sounds when it's hungry makes us all laugh. You'll love it!

What a great book! My daughter had me read it to her so many times she has it memorized. We got to meet the author at our local library. What a special treat that was!
