5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Thought Provoking
This was a fascinating and thought provoking read - something that I really felt that I should have been siting with a highlighter and taking notes for a class rather than reading for simple pleasure. And I don't mean that it was a chore, I mean that there was so much good stuff in there to read that I know I'll never remember all of it. I'll definitely be re-reading this...

This was a fascinating and thought provoking read - something that I really felt that I should have been siting with a highlighter and taking notes for a class rather than reading for simple pleasure. And I don't mean that it was a chore, I mean that there was so much good stuff in there to read that I know I'll never remember all of it. I'll definitely be re-reading this before long.

This book takes you through the history of America from the first settlers to the founding fathers and into today looking at the impact that Christianity in general and the Bible in particular has had on how our nation has been shaped. It ends by looking at where we are today and how we are trying, apparently with every fiber of our being, to scoot away from any Biblical influence and how that is already destroying who and what we, as a nation, are.

I highly recommend this to anyone who's even curious about the Christian history of America.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible's Monumental Impact on the United States, December 1, 2009
This review is from: The Book That Made America: How the Bible Formed Our Nation (Paperback)
Jerry Newcomb in The book That Made American Great: How The Bible Formed Our Nation, traces the greatness of America through the direct influence of scripture on its history. He documents with great precision that the Bible was the source which inspired the founding principles of the United States. Why is America great? The founders built the country upon the ground of the Word of God. This new work refutes the present administration's claim that America is not a Christian nation as he opens the readers eyes to the history and phenomenon of the most powerful nation in the annals of mankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, December 29, 2010

did not know that in 1983 President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation stating "....in recognition of the contribution of the Bible on our Repulic and our people do hearby proclaim 1983 the Year of the Bible in the United States. I encourage all citizens, each in his or her own way, to re-examine and rediscover its priceless and timeless message."

This interesting and highly christian statement was somehow shuffled away in the teaching of Ronald Reagan that I received in school. Somehow this information is still lost in the public school rooms - forgotten by those old enough to remember it.

I learned so much while reading this book. What a treasure of information! I closed this book more committed to my home school effort with my children. I was also more confident in the curriculum we had chosen to use: McGuffey Primers and the New England Primer (used for recitation and memorization), Rays Arithmetic, and the 1823 Websters that uses ample scripture in word definition. Through this book it is clearly evident the impact public education has in reinforcing a persons world view (whether biblical or not) and their later life decisions. At one time a biblical worldview was central to education.

This book is rich with information on our christian roots and heritage. I believe it would benefit everyone to read it. America sadly enough has a rising generation that is blind to the deep, rich christian heritage that shaped this nation.

This book will help parents to teach their children the christian roots of American History so they are better equipped in life.

I dare say this is a gem - a christian home schooler's dream history resource; and a public school parent's resource to developing a healthy biblical worldview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Review - The Book That Made America, March 26, 2010

"America is a Christian nation..."

Thus declared the United States Supreme Court in Church of the Holy Trinity vs. the United States.

Jerry Newcombe has clearly and concisely laid out significant evidence that the founding fathers were predominantly Christian in their worldview. In The Book That Made America: How the Bible Formed Our Nation, Newcombe presents a case for Christianity as the foundation for this great Republic.

America's founding fathers were men of faith. Specifically, they were men of the Christian faith; and not deists, or secularists, as revisionist historians would have us believe. And yet, most Americans do not know the rich spiritual heritage of our nation, to their great loss.

Since leaving our Christian heritage, America has fallen into a deplorable state of godlessness; and this can be traced directly to the decisions by our leaders in the past century to leave God out of our lives. In order for America to continue to be a great nation, and a great tool to be used by God in reaching the rest of the world, we need to return to those spiritual roots, to the foundations of our nation, built upon God's sacred Word, and restore the spiritual legacy our forefathers intended for generations to come.

In The Book That Made America, Jerry Newcombe shows conclusive proof that America's Christian heritage was rich and can be extremely well-documented in the early writings of our nation's earliest leaders. Newcombe states that "America's best governing principles come from the Bible directly or indirectly, including the Biblical notion of covenant which gave rise to our Constitution."

Christianity underpins the very fabric of our nation. George Washington stated that "without a humble imitation of Christ, we could never hope to be a happy nation."

Calvin Coolidge, our thirtieth president, remarked, "If American democracy is to remain the greatest hope of humanity, it must continue abundantly in the faith of the Bible."

Newcombe lays out the evidence for the Bible's pivotal role in American history very well. With separate, yet overlapping, sections about how the Bible was influential in not only the settling of America, as well as in the founding of our nation, The Book That Made America cites document after document showing just how important the Scriptures were to the men and women who came, and built, and settled, and established our great nation.

One very interesting section of the book is in Part One: The Book That Made America. Jerry Newcombe provides a fifty question quiz about America's Christian Heritage. He provides the quiz first, and then explains in detail the answers to each question. I am an avid student of American history, and I found several areas where my thinking has been influenced by the revisionism prevalent in our culture today.

Newcombe wraps up The Book That Made America with a section dealing with the idea, "Where did we go wrong?" Can we go back to the ideals set by our forefathers? Newcombe suggests that we can, but not without much effort and pain. We have a lot of backtracking to do to get back to the path laid out by the great men and women who founded this nation.

Newcombe has done a great job laying out the facts about how the Bible was a critical part of the formation of the United States. This book took a colossal amount of research, as evidenced by his extensive endnotes and sources cited.

The Book That Made America is a crucial book for Christians to read. In order for America to stay the course, Christians need just such a wake up call as this.

I would suggest that this book be added to the library of every serious student of Christianity and America. Don't wait. Read The Book That Made America now.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Is No Other, August 17, 2009
This review is from: The Book That Made America: How the Bible Formed Our Nation (Paperback)

God truly shed His Grace on America, and He has because America was founded as a Christian nation.

Though Bible verses on buildings and monuments all over Washington D.C., and for that matter America, are being chisled off as quickly as they can be, and history revised is being done so throughout American textbooks, there still is ample proof to embarass President Obama that America truly is yet a Christian nation.

Dr. Jerry Newcombe has detailed a masterful study on the founding of America through the Book of Books, the Holy Bible, which formed the cornerstone of the greatest, free country the world has ever known.

Chapter upon chapter flows with erudite documentation from many of the finest minds in political pursuit to formulate the charters, constitutions and supporting documents that led to the establishment of the only truly free society the world has ever witnessed.

Even in these dark hours literally millions from across the planet are pursuing citizenship papers to the land dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Should these words sound foreign or presumptuous, one need merely read this book to confirm the truths that once were held to be self-evident.

If ever a group of men were mustered to shore the line of defense of this beleaguered republic, these chronicled between the covers of "The Book That Made America," are such.

Ancient eyes will tear, and youthful hearts will burn with the knowledge that there was a finer hour, long ago, when men could see the lights of a city set on a hill that bordered the ranges of eternity.

And the road to that city is revealed in the lines of this collection of documents that espy the heralds of liberty, centuries past, proclaiming that to honor the King, you must first stand for God.

And to stand for God, you needs must begin prostrate before His Throne, calling on His Name to deliver America, yea, again.

As Scripture commands, "For I am God, and there is no other..." {The New King James, Isaiah 46:9a.}

1.0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment, October 21, 2009

I was really hoping for a book of good scholarship that would show what a wonderful book the Bible is and how it helped shape the way we work and think.

Instead, I got a diatribe on how we need to be a Christian nation. Worse, I felt the scholarship was shoddy.

Unfortunately, I felt that Newcombe did a lot of research, and then bent it to fit an agenda instead of showing the truth for what it is and letting it ring through the ages.

The Bible is so important to our way of thinking and the formation of western society. It should be read by everyone. Newcombe missed a real chance to draw people from all nations into God's word.
