Book Description

October 13, 1998
Twins . . . the very word evokes a sense of awe and curiosity.  Twins inhabit spaces unknown, unimaginable to most of us.  At a time when multiple births are becoming more and more common, the wondrous spell of twins remains, as does our fascination with a relationship like no other.  Now, in a magnificent collection of photographs and original essays, authors Debra and Lisa Ganz, the well-known owners of Twins restaurant, provide a rare journey into the secret world of twins.

In a series of fascinating profiles, 38 sets of twins speak about their relationships while stunning photographs illuminate the depth of their bonds.  Meet the Paul twins, so different yet so alike:  Alexandra, former star of the TV series Baywatch, and her "soulmate," sister Caroline, a firefighter and critically acclaimed author. . . NFL football players Ronde and Tiki Barber, who struggle with separation when they are drafted by rival teams . . . 94-year-old Charles and Eugene Morgenthau, loving lifelong companions whose memories are richer for having been experienced together. . . 18-year-old Carrie and Corinne Badach, who, unlike so many teenagers struggling to be different, glory in being the same.

From twin toddlers to twin clowns, from twin psychics to twin undertakers to a family with an amazing three generations of twins, this remarkable volume is a rich, evocative tribute to one of life's most powerful, intimate, and mysterious relationships.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Twin sisters Debbie and Lisa Ganz, owners of the Twins Restaurant in New York City, open their vast address book to offer a plethora of profiles and photographs of identical and fraternal twins. The Book of Twins showcases multiples with noteworthy talents, stories, and struggles. Beautiful high-resolution, slightly sepia-toned black-and-white photographs by Bill Ballenberg capture the spirit of each relationship. After reading these essays and testimonials, it becomes clear how complex and charged the twin relationship can be. While the book's main focus is discussing the joys and pains of the twin relationship (as told by twins themselves), it also offers sidebars with twin statistics, such as twin birth rates and the number of twins married to twins. Each essay offers its own unique, fascinating story--the successful surgical separation of a pair of conjoined infant twins, a pair of deaf twin girls who have grown up to become successful social work students, a fearless pair of blind twins who water ski, snow ski, bicycle, and high dive together. Twins also discuss their separation anxieties, painful periods of estrangement, and subsequent forgiveness and renewal. Both twins and nontwins alike will enjoy and appreciate these photos and essays illuminating the mystique of the twin relationship. --Gilia Angell

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, sensitive and fun, December 9, 1999
This review is from: The Book of Twins: A Celebration in Words and Pictures (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading and re-reading this book. The bond and special relationship between twins is felt as you read the individual stories. These stories were extremely well-written and they generated both tears and laughter as I read each of them. The book provides an informative and entertaining insight into the world of twins. The photography was equally superb. This is a beautiful "table top" book. All ages will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL, December 27, 1998
This review is from: The Book of Twins: A Celebration in Words and Pictures (Hardcover)
As a mother of twins I have read a number of books about twins, this one is different. I took it to a Mothers of Twins meeting one night and you would not believe how many women wanted to look at it. Of course we all have something in common, twins! Everyone in the room was warmed by it's beautiful photos and stories. My copy sits out in our living room where my ten year old twin sons can enjoy it. No one can truly understand the special relationship a twin has, but this book puts it all in to prespective. I recommend this book to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming!, December 2, 1998

Until looking at this book, I never truly realized the power and mysteriousness of the twin bond. I always knew it was there, my sister and I are closer than I could ever be with anyone else. It used to annoy me--not being alone, not being "my own person". But now I am so thankful for it! This book makes me cry every time I see it. Such close relationships are so beautiful to see.
