From Library Journal

About 2.5 percent of the work force is employed by the federal government, with a high percentage of the new employees hired each year being professional and technical workers. In The Book of U.S. Government Jobs, Damp, the author of numerous books on government careers, walks job seekers through the federal hiring process. This seventh revision follows the same arrangement as its predecessor but includes updated statistics, added electronic tools, a discussion of new application forms, a revised picture of the federal job outlook, and some expanded sections. Chapters provide a good overview of qualifications, pay, and benefits; requirements for civil service exams; veteran preference considerations; opportunities for the disabled; and interviewing tips. The text is visually enhanced with a good use of bold topic headings, boxes, margin comments, and tables. Recommended for academic and public library career collections. [BOMC alternate.] Post Office Jobs notes that the U.S. Postal Service employs more workers than any Fortune 500 company, with over 40,000 positions opening each year. This book aims to help applicants identify job openings, match their skills to job classifications, provide information on when and where to take qualifying exams, and deal with applications, r?sum?s, and interviews. Following an overview of the USPS and its hiring process, types of jobs, and benefits, a large portion of the book is devoted to how to take qualifying exams, with sample questions and answers. Brookhaven Press extends and updates information for these titles and their other career books by hot-linking to federal agency employment web sites from its own site (http://federaljobs.net). Recommended for public libraries.

From Booklist

Now in its sixth edition, Damp's book on federal employment is recognized as one of the more practical guides for finding work with the government. Though his title suggests that this is a listing of job openings, Damp instead shows how the federal hiring process works. He explains how to find out about vacancies and openings, notes which agencies in which locations have the most positions, shows how to fill out applications, and reassures those concerned about civil service exams. This new version of last year's edition, which includes information about revised application forms and procedures, student employment, and the government's job postings on the Internet, is accompanied by IBM Windows job application software OF-612 Lite, prepared by DataTech Software Inc. (Last year's original sixth edition is still available in paperback and is a good buy for $18.95.) David Rouse

5.0 out of 5 stars Empty.Net Online Job Search 2000, January 17, 2000

Webmaster (Empty.Net Online Job Search) - See all my reviews
Finally, someone has written a book on government jobs that is not only up-to-date but easy to follow and understand. One of the best career guides I've read. I found all of the information I needed to locate, find and apply for government jobs. The Chapter on Completing Your Application was especially helpful. It shows you step-by-step how to complete your application or resume and it provides an actual job announcement and a well constructed sample application to guide you through the sometimes complex application process. The author also provides an easy-to-follow Job Hunters Checklist that walks you through your federal job search. Loaded with resources such as agency addresses, helpful web sites, and job hotlines and it covers special hiring programs including student hiring, overseas jobs, jobs for people with disabilities and much more. Well worth the purchase and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a government job.
