5.0 out of 5 stars Essential coffeetable cool for surfers and oceanlovers, August 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Waves: Form and Beauty on the Ocean (Paperback)
This book is just beautiful. It takes you away.

Of course the first thing you notice are the photos. They are just stunningly gorgeous. And the publisher thankfully had the foresight to use extremely thick, high-quality paper.

Maintaining the high level of the photos, author Drew Kampion takes you on a journey of edu-tainment in the 20-30 pages of text and photos. For example, I never knew that a deadly tidal wave is often less than two feet high -- yet often a mile long. A quiet killer, apparently ships can pass over it never even noticing it. Even the most knowledgeable waterman will learn a great deal from this stuff, and have fun doing so.

It's just a timeless, beautiful book, aptly titled, "The Book of Waves". Surfers and ocean lovers should just have the book to take them away to empty waves whenever they want them. Buy it, slap it on the coffee table, and impress your friends with your high degree of ocean cool.

Be prepared to sink into a comfortable chair and sail-away into the magnificent photographs that Drew Kampion and Art Brewer have assembled. I never get tired of reading the text or looking at the glorious pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars UNIQUE GIFT, January 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this book for my father-in-law who is now 87 years young. He surfed until he was approx. 60,has a home on the beach in Newport Beach, CA and takes immense joy in the ocean on a daily basis. He loved this book, and felt that it captured the unique, ever-changing beauty of the ocean. I was stoked to find this book, since I believe it is now out of print. My only disappointment was the cover was a little roughed up, but my father-in-law didn't seem to mind, so I'm pretty satisfied with this purchase. I have really come to appreciate AMAZON.com. You can literally (no pun intended) find everything and then some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calms me down, January 6, 2010
This review is from: The Book of Waves: Form and Beauty on the Ocean (Paperback)
If you're feeling a bit stressed, sit down with this book and flip through the pages. The serene beauty of the wave photographs will calm you right down as you realize just how small you are compared to massive oceans. Nature's own symmetry and repetition in wave formations act as kind of visual "chant" for stress relief. Instead of pouring yourself a drink, or having that cigarette to calm down, find a quiet space and sit down with this stunning book. After a couple of deep breaths you'll feel like you are floating peacefully in the ocean.

Besides a great text, exploring majority of details regarding waves formation, this book is a master piece of art, not only for the photographs but also for the incredible drawings. It's a must have for those who are serious about studying waves from a surfer's perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Waves: Form and Beauty on the Ocean (Paperback)
The magnificent photographs in this book calm me after even the most aggravating of days in New York City. The pages of scientific explanation are clear and interesting. My only criticism is that the introductory "meditation" has a very religious/creationist slant. Otherwise, this is a beautiful book.
