two fantasy books in one volume [no spoilers],

This review is from: The Book of Years, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
"The Book of Years Volume #1" combines two stories "The Horse Lord" and "The Demon Lord" by Peter Morwood. Although the charming narrative has both imaginative and conventional heroes and terrorizing creatures, misspelling and repeated words unfortunately lace the poorly edited text.
"The Horse Lord" details the journey of Aldric Talvalin, distant heir to an outlying Horse Clan. The storyline develops as a small party quest involving magic, including various necromantic spells, and swordplay with legendary beasts and fascinating foes to find key artifacts. On the other hand a quickly introduced romance undermines the tension between characters. "The Demon Lord" continues the saga of Aldric Talvalin about two months after the preceding story. Aldric's assignment begins as a relatively straightforward task yet escalates into a confrontation with a werewolf and ends up battling an ancient evil for a realms survival. As before, a hasty romance undercuts a perilous mission. Military and political figures play essential roles however the political drama asserts minimal activity. A detailed map of the significant terrains and comprehensive appendix would have been useful. I highly recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre. Thank you.

I read the "Book of Years" over 15 years ago when in highschool; I loved it then and I still read my old originals now. This series in my opinion is one of the classic swords and sorcery stories and sadly one of the "lost gems" in the genre. Thankfully DAW republished it. Hopefully they wisely republish Morwood's "Clan War" series which is a prequel to the "Book of Years" and the supposed sequel to the latter called "The Star Lord". This series is reminiscent of Brian Daley's duology "Star followers of Coramonde" and "Doomfarers of Coramonde", and if anyone out there knows about those, then you know what I mean! Peter Morwood has written an action filled series with characters you will both love and love to hate.
