Thorough, complete and clearly written,
By Stringybark (Canberra, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bookbinding & Conservation by Hand: A Working Guide (Paperback)
This could well be the best practical guide to bookbinding, even stacked up against the classics of bookbinding instruction (which to me are Town's 1951/1963 'Bookbinding by Hand', Burdett's 1975 'Craft of Bookbinding', and Cockerell's many editions of 'Book-binding and the Care of Books'). Laura Young's explanations are very thorough and she has good anticipation of what could go wrong and advises what to do if it does. Her descriptions are very clear too. Of the ones I've mentioned, hers is the most recent, so she is aware that traditional supplies are becoming harder to find and newer substitutes have to be considered. However she is still very much within the school of proper conservation bookbinding. There are absolutely no junk crafts here - this is to do with the highest level of refined, best quality professional work. Books on bookbinding are the sort of thing where you end up with a few, since there are different approaches and each writer emphasises different aspects of the art. Laura Young's is a very good one for your shortlist.

This book is a real gem, I know as this is a second copy for me! (bg)
I had forgotten that I had a copy, oedered again and was re introduced to this well illustrated book of instructions. This goes into sewing frames, great basic knowledge for referance and any beginning book biner. I kept this book, evan though it was a third paaarty purchase, better condition than my well worn addittion. This is a keeper, to be passed along to serious students of the art. |
