An Absolute Must for Professional Writers,
By Kate Clabough (Louisville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
I have been freelancing for more than a dozen years and wish Ms. Thompson would have written this book sooner. Her bookkeeping tips and advice are invaluable to anyone writing professionally. She almost makes it seem easy for this mathmatically challenged writer.
Since this book is written for a specific target - writers - ALL of the information is relevant and useful for those in this chosen profession. The book covers everything from figuring out what travel expenses are deductible, to determining taxable writing income and knowing how to claim home office deductions plus so much more. "Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers" needs to be on every writer's shelf right next to "Writer's Market" as a must have resource for writing success.

Become a Successful Writer with this Book,
By Michelle Dunn "Award winning author, columnist" (The White Mountains of NH) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
Writer's think about their writing or getting writing jobs so they have something to write about. They don't think about taxes or expenses or billing and getting paid, until it's unavoidable and they have to deal with it. Most writer's don't have bookkeeping experience, so what do they do?
They pull out their well worn copy of Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers by Brigitte Thompson and let out a sigh of relief. Thompson shares her expertise, knowledge and skills with you, the writer on how you can choose a business name for your writing business, deal with your income, track your income, how to deal with business deductions, expenses of all kinds, home office deductions and setting up a realistic and BASIC (it's in the title!) business entity and everything that goes along with it. She also includes a chapter of blank forms you can use that make it SO easy. You can be a freelance writer without this book but in my opinion you can be a much more successful freelance writer with this book.

In addition to all the very accessible information, the author includes pages and pages of forms, checklists, and lists that make it easy to get organized. The advice is straightforward and clear. Anyone who makes any money as a writer needs this excellent, first class business guide.

This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
Writers have a different set of things to consider when it comes to book keeping, and this book walks even the most math-challenged writer through the details with ease.
Ms. Thompson has a natural teaching ability that makes anyone reading feel she is siting across the table and teaching personally. She has anticipated any questions that may arise and addresses them efficiently. I will never recommend any other book keeping book after having read this one-it is simply the best there is out there.

Raves for this book!,
By Homeschool Mom (Southwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
This book is a great asset for any writer and what a useful tool! While I know the basics, this book can help you navigate through the confusion that can be bookkeeping. It covers everything from royalty payments to what to do when you have agent fees.
I would have never thought to deduct some of the business expenses I had when writing, had Brigitte Thompson not brought them to my attention. The lists and supporting information are invaluable! The web sites offered are also quite helpful and I love that there are tips from other writers.

Must Have Book for Freelance Writers,
By
This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers is a book every freelance writer or author should have on their bookshelf. Expert author Brigitte A. Thompson takes the complicated subject of bookkeeping for freelance writers and authors and breaks it down into easy-to-read and easy-to-take action chapters. Her conversational style of writing keeps the book interesting and all the tips, how-to's and sample forms make Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers a no-brainer when it comes to walking you through the process of setting up your own bookkeeping system. And even if you're planning on outsourcing your bookkeeping or tax preparation, this book gives you all the information you need to understand the best practices and to ask the right questions to make sure you're paying the right amount of taxes, and yet still being able to keep more of the money you make.
As the director of the Writer's Business Academy, I've added this book to the recommended reading list and Resource list for our students - and if you're a freelance writer or author, I highly recommend that you read it too.

I am a new freelance writer. And while I THOUGHT that I could find just about everything I ever needed on the worldwide web, I realized there was not a good one-stop-shop for the boring business side of freelance writing. Brigitte Thompson's Bookkeping Basics for Freelance Writers explains to writers, in easily understandable terms, how to get started, record income, deduct expenses, etc., in a short, handy read. The author provides sample forms and even sample contracts to help get writers started. Thank you, Ms. Thompson, and Crystal Press for this well-written one-stop guide that has helped simplify my life.

A Must For All Writers,
By
This review is from: Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers (Perfect Paperback)
The perfect bookkeeping guide for writers of all sorts! I'm a self-published author and, I must confess, I have a natural aversion to all things financial. But this book is not a dull and incomprehensible instruction manual. Brigitte Thompson walks us through each topic, with easy to understand options and examples. It's like having your own likable tutor!
