Editorial Reviews

Review
Bookkeeping And Tax Preparation is an excellent "how-to" book for starting and building a prosperous bookkeeping, tax, and financial services business. Bookkeeping And Tax Preparation shows how anyone with a flair for figures can become an expert in their own business, making the most of their capital investment in an entrepreneurial enterprise, find the right market for their services and then marketing their services effectively. Bookkeeping And Tax Preparation explains how to attract and keep satisfied customers, handle the busy tax season, become an employer of others, build a comfortable retirement, and more! With the annual tax season closing in again, Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation will provide everything needed to for the aspiring entrepreneur. -- Midwest Book Review

Gordon P. Lewis has compiled a very easy to follow book. ... The author is a successful practitioner in a rural resort community who once worked with large urban firms. The book is directed to bookkeepers but can be very helpful to non-bookkeeping types who want to know more about this profession. Small Business Opportunities Journal, January 1997

Recommended by Working at Home magazine, Vol. 3, No. 3, Spring 1998 -- Book Review

Product Description
All the techniques and information for turning a flair for figures into a highly profitable, well-rounded financial services career.

The book considers the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment, looks closely at entrepreneurship, reviews the nuts and bolts and costs of start up, presents the legal requirements, and tells how to acquire adequate computer equipment to do the job right. To build a solid client base, it tells how to analyze cities and towns for bookkeeping service, whether to start fresh or buy a going concern. It tells how much to charge and how to collect and manage the money. Once under way the author discusses work habits that don't run your life, hiring and training employees, diversifying into profitable sidelines, and building a comfortable retirement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Practical Advice for Starting a New Business, April 15, 2000
By Bret R. Helm (Normal, IL United States) - See all my reviews
If you have some basic bookkeeping and tax skills/interests, this book will show you how to put them to use for yourself in straightforward language. The author offers practical advice on all aspects of the business from employees to software to layouts for home businesses. This book is not a detailed book, but it wasn't meant to be. It is obviously designed to be the first book for any would-be entrepreneur interested in the bookkeeping and tax preparation field - and it accomplishes this in spades!

2.0 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing, November 3, 2004
By C. Weyandt "psugirl" (State College, PA) - See all my reviews

After reading the reviews for this book, I was anxious to start reading it right away. Unfortunately,I returned the book the same day I received it. I am in the process of starting a bookkeeping business out of my home and Mr. Lewis's book did not help at all. As I skimmed the book I quickly realized that he prefers tax accounting and a commercial office environment. If you are looking for an overview for setting up shop as a tax accountant, with employees, in an office this book will be perfect.
If you want particulars on starting a home based bookkeeping business keep looking.

Where I travel, this book travels (work, bed, bathroom, you get the idea). I've been running my own bookkeeping business for a year now, and this has just given me GREAT ideas on how to build it up even more! This book is a must!

This book was somewhat useful, but emphasized taxes and a larger business (with office space) too much. It also seems dated.
