Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as "historical" in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer "wonder tales" in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident.
Having this thought in mind, the story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.
- L. Frank Baum
Chicago, April, 1900.

This review is from: 7 Books in 1: L. Frank Baum's "Oz" Series, volume 1 of 2. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in ... City of Oz, and The Patchwork Girl Of Oz. (Paperback)
After watching the Wizard of Oz over the years, I finally decided to read the book(since it's always been one of my favourite movies). So I bought the wizard of oz complete series volume 1. However when it arrived I soon discovered that it looked like a phone book. It's very thin and gets damaged quite easily. I suggest if you are looking at purchasing this item get the hardcover version. Well in the end it's the story that counts. A wonderful story every child should read.
