Book Description

May 6, 1991 0435083228 978-0435083229

One difficult aspect of teaching mathematics in the early grades is tying the subject to other areas of the curriculum, particularly the central core language arts. Mathematics need not-indeed it should not-stand alone, nor must it be allied only to science.

In Books You Can Count On, teachers can explore opportunities for relating math to reading. This teaching resource for primary schools provides a wide range of ideas for teaching mathematics through literature and can be used with any math program. The book includes: a mathematical overview, background information, notes on classroom organization, assessment, and evaluation, and lesson outlines based on forty different stories and poems. Each activity includes a synopsis, preparation for teaching, mathematical aims, evaluation notes, and suggestions for extension; mathematical themes such as size, classification, and spatial relations; and a list of further references.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good source of math lessons for elementary teachers, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Books You Can Count On: Linking Mathematics and Literature (Paperback)
Being universally applied, mathematics appears in many forms in children's books. However, if you are going to use the books to teach mathematics, you need to know about them. Chapter four, the major section of this book, is a list of books for children that contain mathematical concepts. For each book, there is a synopsis of the story, a list of the mathematical topics in the story, how to prepare a lesson based on the book, the activities to have the class perform, indicators to look for throughout the lesson and how long the session should be.

Chapter five is a list of activities based on rhymes and poems, six covers themes such as bed-time and size; seven is a listing of children's books based on counting and chapter eight is an annotated booklist of other mathematical topics. If you are teaching mathematics to children in early elementary school, then this book contains a selection of lessons that you will find of value to you and fun for the children. The homeschooling parent will find it an invaluable source of lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey to the Other Side, May 15, 2001

This review is from: Books You Can Count On: Linking Mathematics and Literature (Paperback)
This is a great book. I teach 8th grade mathematics. Students are captured by the story line and enjoy working through the problems that Katie, Tony, Rodman and Zara have to solve to get back home from the other side of the universe.
