Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

This up-to-date and practical handbookoffers 170 ready-to-go booktalks, primarily of fiction; 330 additional annotated reading suggestions; and learning extension ideas that promote comprehension, discussion, writing, and research. Chapters cluster the booktalks by United States history, world history, social studies, language arts and literature, mathematics, science, the arts, and physical education. Chapters are subdivided into major interest areas. For example, "Social Studies" includes books on "Politics and Government," "Personal Issues," "Children with Disabilities," and "Multicultural Novels." The entries are lively, engaging, and informative. The designated reading levels range from third to eighth grade. At the time of publication, all titles were in print and most were published in the last 10 years. The objective of this book is not remediation, but expansion of students' reading horizons and exposure to books on a variety of topics. This handy guide will lead teachers, librarians, and students to a diverse, quality selection of books that builds literacy, generates enthusiasm for reading, and reflects the middle-school curriculum.

From Booklist

More than 170 booktalks and an additional 330 suggested books for middle-school students are organized by subject. Books were selected on the basis of good reviews, currency, and in-print status. Most of the books are fiction, but 10 percent are nonfiction. Brief booktalks are followed by learning extensions and suggestions for further reading. Each book entry has assigned interest and reading levels, although no source is given for these levels. In addition to an author/title index, there is a subject index. This author has made a valuable contribution with her well-written booktalks, learning ideas, and choices of books to use. RBB
