5.0 out of 5 stars WORD-RECOGNITION FUN!!
This is a excellent educational tool for preschoolers and adults wishing to hone their vocabulary - and a great TV-alternative.

Words have to be recognized and formed from a wall of letters that get refreshed as you progress. Target-words offer extra points whereas, repeatedly forming easy small words is "punished" with the appearance of burning letter-tiles...

When you first start, this game can be very addictive especially in the Action Game (timed). However, if you're a real word fanatic, after several weeks you'll notice that some of the accepted words are not real words. They don't exist in even the Oxford Dictionary, while others are not only arcane, but are from or in Old High German or Scottish, and I even found one that was Icelandic.

While I'm not that much of a purist, you can rack up 7 million points based upon words that won't even come up in the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle! (By the way, the maximum score according to the folks at PopGames is 3 billion. You can't do that in the timed mode without getting into everything from slang to abbreviations to a great deal of luck.)

Bookworm Deluxe is still fun, but I do wish they had gone "legit" (which is a word according to the makers, but an abbreviated one or slang according to everyone else. Still, it would make a great gift for that someone who loves screwing around with words.

Words have to be recognized and formed from a wall of letters that get refreshed as you progress. Target-words offer extra points whereas, repeatedly forming easy small words is "punished" with the appearance of burning letter-tiles that, if let to reach the bottom, end the game.

This is a perfect example of what has come to be known as Casual Gaming. It would be a good idea to download the 60-min trial version from a site, such as REFLEXIVE (you can Google it), and decide for yourself whether this is indeed your cup of tea.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars More addictive than chocolate?, December 16, 2008

I had never seen this game until a transatlantic flight this summer and it was one of the game selections you could play at your seat. Once home, I kept thinking about it and realized I just had to get it! You will no doubt lose track of time and become engrossed in the game. I love the ability to save a game - I find I get tired of playing after awhile and if you've got a good game going you can save it and pick up where you left off at a later date. Highly recommend it!

I love this game! I played a friends game and knew I had to have one myself. If you love words, this is the game for you. And I've learned a lot of words since buying it. My 11 year old son loves to play too and sometimes we'll sit together at the computer and play a game together. Lots and lots of fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars an old favorite, January 24, 2008

This game kinda keeps my mind challenged. I play a bit of scrabble and it helps with that. I like that they give you challenge words to make and that there are a lot of new words I've learned. No game is perfect, some words it doesn't accept. It does stop "bad" words and it is very easy to catch on. Great for 8+ and a good one to play while someone on the phone has put you on hold. Speakerphone & Bookworm deluxe make a good combo :)I've seen whole families play and the best word I witnessed was reunited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Recreation!, October 17, 2011

This review is from: Bookworm Deluxe (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
I Love Bookworm Deluxe because it stretches you're mind, and is fun cheap recreation, you can get away from the stuff of life for a bit. So, it's a fun, relaxing time-waster. It does have a bit of a problem with Windows 7, after many times of playing it (a year or so) it will quit working and not bring it up, so all you have to do is in your control panel, go to programs and uninstall the Bookworm program then take your cd and reinstall the Bookworm.Bookworm Deluxe (Jewel Case)

WEll, it's a fun game to a point. Frustrating at times. Way too expensive for what it does.

After becoming quickly addicted to this game, one of my sons told me this was the best investment I ever made! Both he and his 5 year old daughter have enjoyed hours of fun with Bookworm--it's educational (oh, how some kids dread that label!)& funny & the monsters are hilarious & the Hero Bookworm is just adorable! With/or without the sound on, Bookworm is an attention getter! Everyone in the house ends up around the computer with gameplay suggestions! We love it!
