Editorial Reviews

Sisters and Tony Award-nominated actresses Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway have delighted and enthralled crowds with BOOM!, their hit concert celebrating the soundtrack of their childhood with unforgettable songs from the 1960s and '70s. Now, this hit show in which, The New York Times raved, the sisters 'lift these songs to expressive heights rarely attained by any singer,' has been recorded during the Callaways' engagement at New York's famed Birdland in May 2011. BOOM! is a joyous, exultant evening -- sometimes zany, often moving, always surprising -- that features tunes made famous by Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Jimmy Webb, Stevie Wonder and others, such as 'A Case of You,' 'Yesterday,' 'You've Got a Friend,' 'Always Something There to Remind Me,' and 'Blowin' in the Wind.' The sisters, who alternate expressive solos with radiant duets, also share heartwarming, humorous stories of their years growing up in Chicago and New York. They are backed by musical director, arranger and pianist Alex Rybeck, bassist Jared Egan, and drummer Ron Tierno, with Rybeck and Egan doubling on background vocals. Their second live CD (following the popular Sibling Revelry), BOOM! brims with a warmth, joy and love that will transport listeners back to a time when the songs on the radio were the soundtrack of life.

Each time, I find a new favorite song and hit repeat many times.

The truth of the matter is that as good and different as we are individually, when we perform together, it becomes its own entity.

As a singer songwriter myself--one who is not easily impressed--I highly recommend this CD!

The best would be to attend a live cabaret evening with Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway, two incredible song stylists backed by their fabulous musicians. The next best is to listen to this album recorded at Birdland May 5 - 7, 2011 in New York City. The two sisters play up differences but when their voices blend, it's magic. These are great arrangements of songs many of us grew up loving opening with 'Got to Get You Into My Life" through a wonderful Stevie Wonder Medley and ending with "You've Got a Friend" and a cabaret encore from Carole King's classic album "Tapestry". Immediately likeable, this is an album I know I will listen to over and over again.

Ann and Liz's sizzling new release is the perfect summer road trip CD. The blending of Ann's incredible range and beautiful smoky timbre with Liz's bell like upper register makes for perfect listening. One can feel much energy and love in their interpretations of these 60's and 70's timeless classics. Ann and Liz are a songwriter's dream because they have the incredible knack of interpreting songs in such a beautiful way that quite often their renditions are an improvement over the originally recorded songs. The excitement of Boom! which was recorded live at Birdland in NYC will leave you smiling from ear to ear. Boom! is a must for anyone who loves outstanding vocals and the thrill of live performance.

It could have been fantastic - but someone needs to tell Ann Hampton Callaway - singing is not a hollering contest. A Case Of You - difficult to listen to - when one loves Joni Mitchell as much as I do! In a recent solo album she showed a compulsion to end each song by belting out the final lyrics - and ruined in my opinion what had come before. She seems bent on continuing this trend. Listen to Ella or Sarah or the current Stacey Kent -one can be so much more expressive - with a little bit less. I had such high hopes. If you loved their earlier duet album as I did - I would still recommend Boom! There are great moments within Boom! Liz continues to be fantastic. When engage in a duet together - it is worth the price of admission. Together they are a bit of heaven.

I have had this CD for three weeks and cannot stop listening to it.
Each time, I find a new favorite song and hit repeat many times.
The Callaway sisters found a way to bridge the gap between generations of listeners with a wonderful compilation of songs that appeal to my 15 year old niece and my 80 year old father. A MUST HAVE!!

For anyone looking for older music (as in an older CD as well as older tunes), this CD is a treat. I have both of the Callaway sisters' joint CD's and they get regular rotation. There's just nothing like the blend of sibling voices, especially when the voice colors are so contrasting (supple and sultry vs. bright and crystal clear) yet so complementary. In both cases, I liked the CD's fine on first listening but have grown to love them increasingly upon further hearings. I felt fairly certain that I would like "Sibling Revelry" since it is well within their wheelhouses (jazz, Great American Songbook, showtunes, etc.) I was a bit skeptical about a "groovy" CD from them but decided to give it a chance since I love the first CD so much. I haven't regretted it.

I do agree somewhat with the reviewer who said their banter on this CD isn't quite as fresh as on "SR" since they again put the emphasis on how different they were growing up. I certainly hope that if there is ever a third CD (and I hope there is), they won't go to that well again. Still, the actual examples of their differences are funny and endearing.

I mostly disagree with that reviewer concerning the tunes being overdone or dull. Just how often do you hear Petula Clark's hits covered? Further, the arrangements are, for the most part, quite different from the original cuts, the best example being Ann's gospel-infused version of "Blowing in the Wind." With that said, I do think that there are two songs that have been recorded enough already. The first is "Memories" from "The Way We Were." I would have much rather heard what they would have done with Jim Croce's "Photographs and Memories" from the early 70's, which would have served the same thematic purpose.

Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway are two the the finest voices in America today. Individually each of their voices has a uniquely different character yet they blend perfectly on the many duets in Boom. And the solos are each jewels. I am literally lifted to an emotional high after hearing Ann sing "A Case of You" (I believe I could listen to a case of Ann's songs and still be wanting a case more). And Liz's perfect rendition of two Jimmy Webb songs has me breathless every time I hear it. AND the album is just plan fun and uplifting. I play it a good deal because it lifts my spirits and I can sing or hum along to the myriad of tunes they sing from the 60's and 70's. It is only right that their duet of "That's the Way I Always Heard it Should Be" was recommended by USA Today on Aug. 2 as their number one track and pick of the week. Buy this album and check out some of Ann and Liz's other albums as well. The Callaway sisters are a national treasure.
