Book Description

January 15, 1998
Are you going to allow your waist to expand and your mind to narrow without a struggle? You, who marched against war and launched the sexual revolution? You, slip into midlife without so much as a backward glance? No way! This irreverent look at life on the cusp of fifty, from two "boomer babes" who are too old to be young and way too young to be old, is just what you need to stay hip, hot and happy. From kids who won't move out to parents who don't recognize you, from cosmetics to cosmetic surgery, Boomer Babes covers it all. From such mysteries as to how to find Mr. Right (even in the wrong suit) to male menopause (did you ever doubt it?) to how to keep the AARP from finding you (it's impossible) to authors' feisty take on midlife issues will have you redefining, redesigning, and reinventing yourself before you can say "Happy Birthday!"

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As its title suggests, this "guidebook to staying hip and hot without flipping out" at almost 50 is not politically correct. Stasi is a journalist; Rogers, a music producer (and coauthor of Saints Preserve Us! 1993). Their strength is snappy patter, opening with "Fifty Good Reasons to Turn Fifty" and "Commandments" --10 "for Preserving Babedom"; 10 "for Preventing Old Fartdom." Four chapters focus on finding a man; two on menopause (hers and his); others on work issues, diet, exercise, hair, makeup, cosmetic surgery, children, parents, "Fallen Idols," money, AARP, and celebrating one's fiftieth birthday. This should not be the only advice book for peri-menopausal women on your shelves: the authors often push too hard for laughs, they assume all their readers are heterosexual, and they handle complex medical questions--such as hormone replacement therapy--much too casually. On the other hand, some who would never read Sheehy or Greer will like Stasi and Rogers' sass, so Boomer Babes could be a helpful supplement to more solid books on middle age. Mary Carroll

Review

"A witty, amusing guide to coping with aging, written by two bright successful women who thought it would never happen to them" --Donald Trump

"This is for all of us who have reached the midway mark and sworn we'd go 'kicking and screaming into the night' and for anyone with the vision to realize that 'no one is except'. An uplifting book." --Betty Buckley, actress, winner of Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, July 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Boomer Babes: A Woman's Guide to the New Middle Ages (Paperback)
I laughed so hard that I was crying! I was truly surprised at how easy this book is to read. Having turned 50 last year, I could relate to most of it already and it somehow made me feel better to know that I'm not the only one slowly falling apart. It was a marvelous little "what to expect in the future" book written in a humorous way. I especially found the chapter about the AARP hilarious since I had received my first query from them when I was 35 and was never able to get them off my back. I finally gave in and joined. All the boomers in my office, and that's 6 out of 7 people, have enjoyed it as well and want to purchase copies for their collections. Boomer Babes is definitely a must read for any woman approaching 50. Thanks to Linda Stasi and Rosemary Rogers for finding the humor in growing older and sharing it with us.

My flight across the country was hysterical because I read the entire book...twice! My husband wanted to know why I was laughing out loud...but these authors have put some humor into this "getting more experienced" deal! All of my friends laugh reading the cover, so my Christmas list is nearly complete! Thanks ladies for your insights and wisdom.

5.0 out of 5 stars insightful and hilarious, May 2, 1999

As a fifty year old male,I was curious about how my female counterparts view relationships between the sexes. The book was eye opening and a fast read. It overflowed with wit that struck home! I intend to buy this book for several friends who will identify with both the authors and the subjects. Given stasi's professional background, I knew that she is incapable of writing a boring book.
