Book Description

Are you a baby boomer struggling with getting older? Do you get dragged down by the daily challenges of trying to keep your weight under control and seeing an old person staring back at you when you look in the mirror? Do you find yourself searching for names that used to come to you easily? How are you coping with the onslaught of technological changes? Have you learned to tweet? Are you stressed out by your aging parents? Do you worry about what’s going to become of you when you get old?
Then you’ll relate to this author’s take on life. Lorie Eber, a re-careered lawyer, who is now a Gerontologist, addresses these boomer issues with her rapier-sharp wit and distinctive “tell it like it is” style, honed on the streets of New York. She talks candidly about the pain of her career reinvention, the challenges of keeping up with technology and the disquieting feeling that life is going by all too fast. Her introspective style also lends itself to creative insights, such as the off-the-wall notion that Starbucks Cafés provide the perfect model for boomer elder care.
This book will help you laugh at the ups and downs of aging and look at the bright side. After all, aging beats the alternative, don’t you think?

This book is a funny read. Lorie Eber has entertaining insights to getting old. Being male and in my 60's, I read this with a bit of hind sight. Its a good balance of humor and reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Boomers, caregivers, and all the rest of us October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book by Eber is not just for those taking care of the elderly. It is primarily aimed at those of us "planning" to get old. She describes with dry humor and witty insight her own confrontations with the aging process. She is in her fifties and, although considered as fit as an Olympic athlete, she recognizes physical, emotional and mental changes in herself that are inevitable. She advises readers on how to identify and accept those changes, and how to swing gracefully and happily into Life without fear or denial.
Some of her chapter titles provide an idea about the scope of her book: "I'd Rather Be An Old Lady Than A Teenager", "Abandon Your Unwarranted Assumptions About Technology", "Boomers, Get Used To Your Aging Brain", among others. She discusses healthy weight issues, cosmetic "fixes" and social networking in this book, and provides links to sources providing more information for the reader.
Overall, this is an excellent book for Baby Boomers now facing old age, for those caring for elderly parents/friends/relatives, and for those younger who accept the realities of Life, knowing it will affect them soon enough. I cannot recommend it enough!

It is very interesting to see in writing many of the same thoughts that have gone through my mind. While my career path was very different the aging outcomes are the same. I found this book very entertaining yet thought provoking. I look forward to your next writing endeavor.

More About the Author

Lorie Eber, JD is a nationally known keynote speaker and prolific baby boomer blogger. After practicing law for 23 years, she did some painful soul searching and, with her dad as her inspiration, decided to educate herself as a specialist in aging. Much to her surprise and relief, she also discovered that she had newfound talents, previously hidden under her tough guy attorney persona. Unlike most people, Lorie is comfortable making presentations to large groups of strangers. The same tongue-in-cheek, offbeat sense of humor that makes her a sought after speaker translates into an ability to write relatable vignettes and reflections about whatever life throws her way.
Lorie has been a longtime caregiver for her dad, who is now 94 years old and living in a dementia care facility. She gained hands-on experience in elder care while working for the Council on Aging Orange County for six years in various capacities, including as a field Ombudsman and as the Coordinator of the Council's Continuing Education Program.

She's been an Instructor of Gerontology at Coastline Community College since 2006. Her avocation is staying in shape. Lorie is a Certified Personal Trainer and you'll find her working out in the gym with her husband every day at 5:00 am.

As a keynote speaker, Ms. Eber specializes in creating funny, innovative and engaging educational programs on a wide variety of topics relating to baby boomers, including healthy living, graceful aging and aging-in-place issues. She makes presentations to professional associations, conferences and annual meetings, health care companies, university health symposiums, corporations and community organizations.

Lorie's blogs cover any and all issues aging boomers struggle with, since that's what she knows. Many of her blog posts relate to keeping fit and eating a healthy diet as we age, the challenges of keeping up with the ever-changing world of technology and the ongoing crises inherent in caring for aging parents.
