5.0 out of 5 stars She GETS it., March 16, 2008
This review is from: From Boomers To Bloggers: Success Strategies Across Generations (Paperback)
Wow! The author brings to light so many important issues in today's workforce. It's one of those books you'll have trouble putting down because it just makes so much sense. I found it very easy to read and enjoyed the stories. In some cases, ignorance is bliss -- in the case of generational diversity, there is much to learn and apply. This book will help you do EXACTLY that. I look forward to purchasing more books from this author and have been recommending it to others...daily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Misti is right on target!, May 13, 2008
This review is from: From Boomers To Bloggers: Success Strategies Across Generations (Paperback)
I have found the biggest challenge in business to be the ability to communicate with the people around you, and there is no question that cross-generational communication presents the biggest challenge of all. Misti Burmeister has changed that with one of the most important publications of our time on the subject.

from Boomers to Bloggers should be required reading for baby boomers and the young professionals to whom they will pass the baton. Misti has done us all a service with specific advice on ways to communicate effectively, to break down artificial barriers and to celebrate relationships that would otherwise have been lost in the translation.

Thanks Misti! Awesome work!

I really, really like this book. I have purchased a dozen or so just to give them my clients who have challenges with generations in the workplace. It's a short read and will give you great insight and ideas, for both a baby boomer or generation y.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bridging generational divides with sensitivity and inspiration., August 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: From Boomers To Bloggers: Success Strategies Across Generations (Paperback)
When I first started reading Misti's book I was turned off by her statement that "boomers" tend to stay at companies for long periods of time or their entire career. In my experience working with high tech engineers of that generation I find that to be totally not the case. The generation before the boomers (someone called them the radio generation)definitely did that.

In certain cases I would have permanently shelved the book. But the tone, perspective, and structure was good so I decided to read on and I'm sure glad that I did. Misti gives many enlightening insights and strategies to unify today's generationaly fragmented workforce with much finesse and sensitivity. She doesn't favor one generation over another, which is quite common and indirectly heighten fear, mistrust, and misunderstandings. Being fairly young in years I don't think she totally realizes a lot of the impetuousness, impatience, and indulgence that may characterize gen y was also experienced by the young boomers. Doors singer Jim Morrison shouting: "We want the world and we want it now!" is just as relevant to late teens and twenty somethings in 1968 as 2008.

I really liked her stuff on mentoring a lot, and her idea about reverse mentoring (y er's mentoring older boomers) were great, as were ideas about creating shared visions to bring different age groups and experience levels. Also I thought her summarizing the key points of every chapter was extremely helpful.

Personally, I don't like any of these broad age categories and asked people from Europe and elsewhere if they have such broad age categories and they said no. My cynical side says they are very diffuse categories that can lead to exclusionary thinking and labeling, which at the core have more to do with advertising and consumerism than anything else. However, I wouldn't deny that there is a very sharp, general, technology skills gap between people in their 40's and 50's and those in their 20's and 30's.And the hyper speed that this technology engenders explains a lot in age related worldviews, where the technology generation, wanting fast google related knowledge, while the older group tends to want to absorb more offline material at a slower and sometimes deeper level. Nevertheless this is how it is and I think Misti characterizes the manifestations in a very succinct and approachable fashion.

My hope is someone, perhaps Misti, could write such an excellent text on multiculturalism and multi-generations in the work force,
which is where I feel the even greater barriers to communication and cooperation can be found. But that may too broad a topic for one text.

Anyway I learned a lot about understanding the particular needs and agenda of the generation y that I didn't know and that was definitely worthwhile. I feel this book is essential reading for HR professionals, mangers, executives....

5.0 out of 5 stars From Bloomers to Bloggers, June 20, 2008
By
This review is from: From Boomers To Bloggers: Success Strategies Across Generations (Paperback)
This book came to me with high recommendation and it is covers the topic of workplace relationships much more in depth than I expected.

It has helped me better understand the communication dynamics that I encounter in the workplace. It certainly clears up some of the difficulties I experienced in dealing with Bloggers.

When it comes right down to it, many of our workplace frustrations come from unclear communication. This books should be used in colleges to educate the new workforce. It would be great to see businesses using it as a topic for training.

In fact I will be training the principles highlighted in this book.

A very valuable resource for everyone.

I highly recommend Misti Burmeister's new book "From Boomers to Bloggers:
Success Strategies Across Generations." Ms. Burmeister explains the puzzling
but very real conflicts that often occur in today's work place between seasoned
and entering professionals. She then provides practical communication techniques
for bridging this generation gap that will improve productivity, efficiency, and personal
satisfaction. Arguing persuasively for mentoring relationships that benefit
all parties, Burmeister offers many examples based on her own experiences
and those of colleagues in readable and entertaining prose enlivened by a
variety of inspiring and memorable quotations on leadership and the "good
life."

4.0 out of 5 stars Graduating from college? Read this one first., March 27, 2008
By
This review is from: From Boomers To Bloggers: Success Strategies Across Generations (Paperback)
This book is a nice introduction to life in the working world. It's more than just making money for the weekends... working can be a lot of fun if you take it seriously and understand teamwork is needed to be successful. I am sending this to my nephew (in college) to give him a competitive edge since this is material not even discussed in college. It is written with two perspectives, for the young professional and for the seasoned pro. I feel college grads would be better prepared and more mature after reading this one book.

This book does a great job of discussing the points of view of both sides of the generations, both young and seasoned professionals. I find that it is not only useful for creating effective work relationships but also those personal relationships we all have with different generations such as parents, grandparents and children. I am pleased to recommend this book to anyone who has had to deal with challenges caused by misunderstandings of different generations.
