Book Description

June 2, 2005
: Some elders age gracefully, with barely any signs of diminished capacity. Others manifest severe infirmities, and adult children or others may have to step in and care for them in their twilight years. For someone in this position, The Caregiver's Manual will be a companion on one of life's most difficult but potentially rewarding journeys. In 1900, only four percent of the American population was sixty-five or older. By 2000, this number had more than tripled, and it is expected to nearly double again over the next fifty years. It is estimated that by the year 2050, more than one person out of five will be in the "senior" category.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Having this book in hand is like having advice form a nurse, social worker, psychotherapist and financial planner at your disposal. (The Washington Post )

As much as we might not like to think about it, the time may come when we have to depend on others to take care of us. How fortunate that [the authors] have provided this compassionate, comprehensive guide that teaches people how to care for an elder and how caregivers can care for themselves in the process. (The Washington Post )

Gene Williams and Patie Kay have wrought an immensely and intensely thorough compendium of what every Baby Boomer should know - or anticipate - about caring for, and communicating with, aging parents. With detailed discussions and the best tips available, this guide covers the widest range of information needed, from head to toenail. A whopper of a guide for families. (Beth Witrogen McLeod )

The Baby Boomer's Guide to Caring for Your Aging Parent is the most comprehensive textbook for caregiving I've ever seen. With stories, tools, and how-tos, it offers honest lessons on caring for parents--or anyone! Each chapter teaches techniques on how to meet physical, mental, and emotional needs efficiently and lovingly, while caring for yourself, too. (LeAnn Thieman )

"A Baby Boomer's Guide to Caring for Your Aging Parent," a handbook on elder care that provides careful instructions on topics ranging from finances to communication, and practical tips on everything from preventing bedsores to helping a child cope with saying good-bye to a beloved grandparent... provide readers with more up-to-the-minute medical information and better resources. (Peg Tyre Msnbc.Com and Newsweek )
