More About the Author

Laurie Hertzel is the author of three books, including the memoir "News to Me: Adventures of an Accidental Journalist," published September 2010 by the University of Minnesota Press and winner of a 2011 Minnesota Book Award.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Hertzel grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, where she worked as a reporter and editor for the Duluth News-Tribune. She reported from Russia and Cuba and wrote two books before moving to the Twin Cities to work as a writer and editor at Minnesota Monthly magazine.

She has been a writer-in-residence at the James Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio, and a Knight-Ridder/Duke Fellow at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She has twice served on the faculty of the Nieman Conference on Narrative Editing and has spoken many times at the Nieman Conference on Narrative Writing at Harvard University.

She contributed a chapter to "Real Feature Writing," and her Star Tribune profile of poet Robert Bly was included in the 2011 collection, "Robert Bly in This World."
