I have been purchasing this particular item since 1968 and have accumulated around 17 of them. I have noted a steady decline in paper quality that started in the early 1990s and continues to my latest purchase just a few weeks ago. The problem is excessive bleed-through. For thirty years, I was able to use fountain pens, ranging in quality from dollar pens in the early days to high-end Mont Blanc. The bleed-through got so bad, I had to switch to gel pens. That worked until my most recent purchase. Now they, too, bleed-through...not just through the page, but onto the face of the next as well.

Note that the retail cost at the stationery store in 1968 was $8. I wouldn't mind paying today's higher price if the quality was comparable. Another case of "pay more, get less." In this case, way less. The slip that comes with the book states they'll replace a defective volume. I don't think that will solve the problem of using inferior quality materials in manufacturing the product.

I'll re-post if there's a happy resolution.

Jan. 13, 2013. Alas, there was no happy resolution. A letter sent to the address given on the label on the inside front cover came back from the post office as undeliverable. Nice. I got on the parent corp. website and used their comment form to make a pointed and detailed complaint. Never got a response.

If it were possible, I'd give this product negative stars. I got out my best fountain pen and tried it on this latest volume. The diffusion on the page was so bad, you couldn't read what I had written or printed. The ink bled through to the back of the page and onto the face of the next page. So I grabbed the volume I bought in 1968 and tried out the same pen/ink combination.

As a scientist I used to swear by these lab notebooks, until the last few started falling apart by the time I was through with them. When I tried to take the company up on their money back guarantee all I got was a deafening silence. Their quality (and customer service) is certainly not what it used to be.

Great construction!
If you need to look professional and are tired of steno pads, yellow pads etc. this is it.
Also it's great to use for a legal reference notebook, all of the pages are numbered and if you ripped one out you'd noticed.

I used Boorum and Pease books for over a year without a problem. I purchased a wilson jones book and the pages are falling out. I never had this problem with Boorum and Pease.

I have been using this specific record book for many years, for miscellaneous writing. I have always used a fountain pen for this particular writing. In late 2012 I purchased a new book, which I had filled by last month. Of course I ordered a new one through Amazon, just as I had done last year. The new book arrived two weeks ago and appeared identical to the old one (ones, actually). I started to write on page 1 with the same pen and same ink cartridge (Parker Quink black) that I had used on the last page of the old book. Instantly I suspected that something was wrong, because the script I was writing was thicker and denser than I had ever noticed before. The ink was also bleeding through to the back side of page one, which is page 2, to a degree I had never seen before, a degree that made the use of page 2 for further writing impossible. On at least four instances either a full stop or the dot of an "I" bled all the way through onto page 3, an entirely separate sheet of paper! I filled with first page to be sure that this wasn't just a phenomenon of the first few lines. I also tried writing on page 303 (the next to last page, on the last sheet of paper) and the result was exactly the same as it had been with page 1. Then I tried a gel pen. It was better, but it was somewhat visible on the back of the page. Only a regular ball point pen wrote with no visibility on the back of the page.

Because it was so important to me to continue to be able to write with my fountain pen, I called Esselte. The representative went through with me all the possibilities that could account for my experience. I was left with the conviction that only a change in the composition of the paper itself, to a paper more absorptive of liquid ink, could account for the situation.

We use these ledger books to record the service calls for our plumbing company. I realize there isn't much that can be reviewed when it comes to something like this but they do work well. The printed column lines are clear without being too dark and detracting from the information you record. The spines are strong and sit well on a bookshelf. We use a gold or silver liquid pen to record date information on the spine making it easy to see which book we need when going back to older records. If you do have a question please feel free to post a comment and i will always respond within one day.

I still use these books even in the computer age as records of notes, names, ph numbers, info bytes, etc. It never crashes. It's still smaller than a full-up notebook. Amazon on cursory search had the best value (least expensive, decent shipping, safe on-line source). Delivered promptly.
