Reading all the Amazon Vine reviews made me cringe - you see, this product is not one that should have been sent willy nilly to parents but is instead best used under a doctor's care. It is not for picky eaters. It is not to be used as a quick pick-me-up prior to a soccer game. It is not to be used to balance out a kid's nutrition. No, it is enteral (or liquid) nutrition for kids with serious issues. These issues include those children with G and J tubes, kids who can't eat table food well, and children with feeding or motor-planning disorders.

My 3 yr. old son drinks 4 of these a day, with food as a hobby. He'll eat perhaps 2 tablespoons of food at a mealtime. He has a documented feeding disorder, a documented motor-planning issue, and Failure to Thrive. He's a mess foodwise. And this lets him live. I rather think that is more important than quibbling about sugar content, or how I'm not a mom enough to get my kid to eat right. For kids like my son, they need high caloric nutritional options like these to sustain their lives, while they (and the doctors) figure out which options are the best for them at that time.

I like the fact that these come in a juice box. While my son can't use the juice box functionally yet (he squeezes them and the liquid squirts everywhere), when he is adept enough at using them he can drink his Kids Essentials like a regular kid drinks from a juice box. Tres cool. Pediasure 1.5, Kids Essentials's direct competitor, comes in a not-so-cool can. And it carries a heftier price tag.

My son drinks it quite well, so no issues with the taste. Compared to regular Pediasure (1.0), it is heavier of course, but then, I also add in spoonfuls of Duocal too, to up the caloric count, so that may be how I'm doing it.

So, as a reminder, let's not use this product for meal replacements and instead save it for children who really need it, when under a doctor's care. Thanks!

My daughter was a preemie, and because of that she as a lot of GI problems. She is on a High Calorie Liquid Diet. This is what she was put on. She as to drink 3 of these a day. She likes it, but the only bad thing I can say is that it is very expense. Luckly because of her medical issue our insuraces pays for it.

I liked the taste of Boost Kid Essentials, Vanilla; it has enough calories for a meal replacement and the nutritional value was very good in all areas. I think and have given these to kids making it appear as a snack or treat when the child did not want to swallow any vitamin pill, and they liked it.

I recommend this item.

Flavor Name: Very Vanilla Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
As a parent of two children, ages 2 ½ and 8, the first thing I do concerning any new food product is READ THE LABEL. Upon reading the label, I immediately noticed the following statements, "Talk to your pediatrician about using BOOST kid essentials as a supplement with a meal or as a snack" AND "Use under medical supervision." I then went to the website provided ([...]) for clarification on the medical statements. The website states the following, "Please consult your pediatrician regarding use of BOOST Kid Essentials Nutritionally Complete Drink as a sole source of nutrition." The obvious clarification is the phrase, "sole source of nutrition." Nestle should have clarified the product label concerning the medical warning.
Both my children were OK with the drink, equating the taste to a vanilla milk shake. I tasted the drink, and as another reviewer noted, it tasted a little chalky and sweet-almost powdery. As a snack, the drink completely served its purpose, eliminating any desire for the kids to eat for at least an hour and a half. However, a closer examination of the label tells me why and also causes concern.

First, the drink has 244 calories with 7 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat. Carbohydrates are at 33 grams! The ingredients list water and sugar, in that order, as primary ingredients. I STRONGLY suggest you read the complete ingredients list and nutritional information. Clearly, this product was developed for children suffering onset or intermediate nutritional deficiencies ("failure to thrive" indications) and were diagnosed accordingly (explaining the medical statements). Are your children suffering from a nutritional deficiency to warrant such a high calorie sugar laden drink? Most likely not.

This product would most assuredly be a 5 star product if it were not for the price. Our son has ADHD and due to the medication he has a difficulty staying hungry. His weight has declined as he has been on the medication. This drink is a wonderful option for parents to augment their child's caloric intake. This product is NOT for obese children to snack on, instead this is a high caloric drink for children with eating disorders. I tasted it and its not bad tasting at all, thereby helping children drink it. The straw has pro-biotics embedded in them, (good bacteria in the plastic) as they drink they are getting the bacteria.

Here are the specs:
Energy: 244 Kcal (about as much as 150g of cooked pasta)
Protein 7.3g
fat 9.3g
Carb 33g

It is also packed with many vitamins and minerals.

Pros:
>> Outstanding drink substitute for children with eating disorders
>> Tasty flavor
>> Good bacteria embedded in the straw

Cons:
<< Cost

Most families could afford this product but it can be a strain on people with lower incomes. Mostly due to the fact that a child should drink at least 1 a day. Current prices of $2.70 a pop x 365 days = almost $1000 a year. If your child needs this drink then of course you will spend the money. It just seems that they could lower the price a little. At $1.50 a piece this is then a 5 star product.
