the full title, just to be clear, is ''The Art of Boot and Shoemaking A Pratical Handbook Including Measurement, Last-Fitting, Cutting-Out, Closing, and Making With A Description of the Most Approved Machinery Employed'' ... again, just to be clear

this dusty tome proves to be far, far more practical than ''How To Make A Shoe'', 1882 by Jno P. Headley Jr., which could be described, with some charity, as a picture book for children. having fewer illustrations and far more dense text may be a problem for some, but if you can suspend any reliance on late 19th century verbiage, and the vernacular of shoemaking, you should have no trouble with any books from this time (i loves 'em)

still, if you remain unsure you might consider examining the contents before buying this book in print - by browsing, or downloading a copy, free of charge, at ''Google Books'' (Books dot Google dot COMmerce slash advanced_book_search)

there is a lot of information in this book. just keep in mind that is is very very dry reading. will not teach you how to make shoes but teach you how to make better shoes.

I purchased this book after reading the one review--boy was that a mistake. This book is beyond useless if you want to make shoes or boots. 99% of this book is nothing but verbiage, and the few drawings in the book are of the most general kind. It would be much more accurate to say that this is more a book about the history of shoe and bootmaking rather than a hands on instructional. So, if you want to learn the history of shoemaking from one person's perspective, than this book is for you. But if you want any information at all about making shoes and even making a last, this book is a total waste.

Having gone through I have not been able to find or buy some of the materials mentioned in the book which I needed to complete a project. I am sorry I will not be able to give correct preview because I have not completed anything. I hope an update of new materials that are alternative to the old materials could be suggested so that one could then manage, but as a novice, you have no clue of what to do or whom to ask for advice. I am in limbo at the moment until I can figure out what I can or how I can complete this journey of mine.

My son has an interest in becoming a shoe-maker and we were looking for a practical book that would help him with the practical techniques of shoe and boot making. This was the book he was looking for.

Not enough pictures to suit me but good info anyway. Think the description of book should include the fact there are few diagrams.

I bought this book a few years ago when I got the bug to make my own shoes. I bought it because it was available. I was disappointed to say the least. I had already been making holsters, knife sheaths, etc. for quite some time and feeling quite proud of my ability to learn things on my own with books as a guide(usually because I don't know anyone who knows anything about what I want to learn). I could only get this book at the time and it is not a very good "do it yourself" guide. I have the bug again and although I may use this book as another reference, I would be surprised if it turned out to be helpful.
