Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

" When Kim's father comes in and shouts, 'Boot weather!' Kim can step into her favorite boots and go anywhere she likes"at least, in her imagination. Kim never actually leaves the backyard, but her adventures are depicted in paired illustrations: one of her real activities and the other of her imagined actions. A climb up the slide's ladder becomes a trip up a steep mountain; a piece of playground equipment becomes a tunnel full of lost treasures; a leap across a patch of ice turns her into a skilled hockey player. The last imagined journey is behind Santa in his sleigh, and the book's simple text states: "In boot weather Kim can go anywhere at all . . . and still be home for lunch." Text and art combine for a flowing, unified telling; Vigna's lively book delivers a truthful account of the ways in which children play. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Vigna departs from her usual "message" books with this cheery flight of fancy. After shoveling snow, Kim's father sheds his big black boots on the back porch, and Kim steps into them and into adventure, right in her own snow-covered yard. Small pictures on the left-hand page show what is really happening; on the right, a full page in ink and pastels presents Kim's imaginary derring-do. No shrinking violet this girl, as she climbs up a mountain (up the slide) and zooms down on a luge. As an astronaut, she floats over moon rocks. As an Arctic explorer, she crawls under a snow bridge. Wearing hard hat and overalls, she clambers down into a manhole ("in holes") and, in a circus ring, she is shot from a cannon ("out holes"). After fulfilling several other nontraditional fantasies, she sails off behind Santa and his reindeer. For, you see, "In boot weather Kim can go anywhere at all and still be home for lunch." Prepositional opposites in words and pictures introduce these concepts to preschoolers, although it would be stretching the point to label the book "concept" in nature. The simple text creates a story accessible to beginning readers and, for those looking for books with girls in nonstereotypical roles, this will fill the request. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, Neb.

5.0 out of 5 stars good winter book, February 10, 2008

This review is from: Boot Weather (Hardcover)
A girl puts on snow boots and imagines having all kinds of adventures including walking in space, playing ice hockey, ski jumping, and being a construction worker. Great pictures, very minimal and simple text. My 2 y.o. daughter loves the ending with spaghetti and meatballs.
