Editorial Reviews

For Johnny Winter's Live Bootleg Series Volume 8, the artist surely becomes his instrument in some incredibly guitar shredding live performances. For this edition, the blues wielding axeman steps out with super extended workouts on concert classics like his masterful version of the Freddie King classic "Tore Down," fan favorite "Give It Back" and a super long jam on the classic "Have You Ever Loved A Woman." Johnny also treats the fans to two Elmore James classics and even Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" to make this a truly rockin' blues celebration!

Track 1 (Intro) is 16 seconds and is crowd noise with one yeah from Johnny. Total time approx 53 minutes. Great stuff--Killer guitar (of course, it's Johnny Winter!). Give it Back is my favorite on this CD. Track 6 is a nice slow blues running 13:27. Sound quality is pretty good, slight inside-a-box effect to my ears on all but Give it Back which is the best sound quality on the CD. Everything on this CD is wonderful: buy it, spin it, love it!

Give It Back sounds like it is from Barcelona Boogie 1990
Roll Over Beethoven sounds like it is from Paradise Theatre, Boston 1978
Stranger sounds very similar to the Stranger on Live Bootleg #3

Johnny Winter plays some of the best blues and rock songs for this latest bootleg series disc. Freddie King's Tore Down is a fast paces rocker Texan style that showcases the legendary way he handles the guitar. Another great track, Roll Over Beethoven is just killer! Give It Back with its brilliant lead guitar is some of the best riffs on the disc. Stranger is also one of the Elmore James tributes on this cd. Johnny really plays a mean guitar!

I see no limitations in this 8th volume. Johnny Winter is one of the few guitarists that you can identify just by hearing a few chords.
