"The King of B-Westerns & Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ "Bootleggers (1974)",
This review is from: Bootleggers (DVD)
VCI Entertainment presents "Bootleggers" (1974) (Dolby digitally remastered)...Under director/producer Charles B. Pierce, screenplay by Earl E. Smith, music composed by Jaime Mendoza-Nava, songs by Dorsey Burnette...the cast include Paul Koslo (Othar Pruitt), Dennis Fimple (Dewey Crenshaw), Slim Pickens (Grandpa Pruitt), Betty Bluett (Grandma Pruitt), Steve Ward (Silas Pruitt),Seamon Glass (Rufus Woodall), Joy N. Houck Jr. (Bobby Joe Woodall), Jimmy Clem (Big-un Woodall), Jaclyn Smith (Sally Fannie Tatum), Darlyn Ann Lynley (Leola Gauldin), Earl E. Smith (Sheriff), Charles B. Pierce (Othar Pruitt), James Tennison (Mr. Slayton). . . . .our story has to do with "Moonshine", running homemade whiskey in the Ozark Mountains...watch the scene with newcomer Jaclyn Smith as she shoots a snake just before skinny-dipping in a mountain stream...Smith turns the tide on Paul Koslo and Dennis Fimple when she steals their cloths at the local swimming hole...funny cues at the general store with some of the oldtimer locals...exciting car chases from the sheriff and their rivals in selling their liquor...the film was renamed "Bootlegger's Angel" because of Jaclyn Smith the star of the TV Show "Charlie's Angels" in which she appeared...much in the same time period as "O Brother Where Art Thou?" from the Coen Brothers many nostalgic settings.....there is a great deal of entertainment for the serious "film-buff"...all courtesy of VCI Entertainment, who in my humble opinion is the best there is in restoring early serials and features like this one.

My mother and father went to the premier. We had friends that were in the film. I saw the film myself several times and had the poster on the wall of my bedroom when I was in High School. I loved it and want to see it again so bad. I have tried for many years to find it and have not been able to yet. I would dearly love to have a copy. Please bring back to dvd or vhs! :)

Well, there are sentimental reasons why I like this movie. My cousin is Jimmy Clem and my brother married Slim Picken's daughter that played the blond character with Jaclyn Smith. I actually got to meet the cast while they were filming so a flood of memories came upon me as I watched it now.
It is a simple story about bootleggers and running from the sheriff, but it is nice to see great actors, some in their prime of their career and others just beginning like Jaclyn Smith was. I would recommend this movie to anyone who just likes a good, clean fun type of movie and have a few laughs without having to figure out a complicated plot. |
