The Melvins album you can listen to between meals...,

... without ruining your appetite. As much. Even without the overdrive Melvins still sound creepy and stomach-churning. For me the murmuring, whispering, killer-in-the-shadows vocals here are actually an improvement on Buzz's usual moose-in-rutting-season wail, while lifting the veil of noise confirms what we've always believed -- that Melvins can write tunes, lyrics, and above all, grooves.
Don't let that put you off, though. This isn't 'Melvins Unplugged' (for a start, despite what some other reviewers think, it's not acoustic) or an attempt to become more radio-friendly. In fact, following the story of the Maggot/Bootlicker/Crybaby trilogy, it may be an ironic commentary on what happens when certain other bands take that route -- but I don't think you need to know any of that to appreciate this. All you need to know is that Melvins here are as smart and dark and riff-tastic as ever, and you can fully enjoy 'Bootlicker' at 4am without waking the neighbours. Result!

The Bootlicker is marvelous. After the first listen I was somewhat awestruck because I had heard that it was going to be the "pop album" of the trilogy, but it is definetly not. Instead The Melvins play their own version of 70's prog rock and of course being that they are the melvins, it rocks. Most people will purchase this expecting the maggot part 2 which it isn't. The Bootlicker seems to me to be a lot more rewarding in the end than the maggot. Every time I listen to it I appreciate it more and more. The Bootlicker is uniquely it's own while retaining the feel of the first and hopefully the third part of the trilogy.(toy toy toy toy toy)

from start to finish,

i have to say, bullhead and stag aside, very few melvins albums are solid start to finish. this one however is the most consistanlty solid release. it's pure psychadelia. mellow for the most part. VERY catchy. rather simple for the most point. some noteworthy aspects of bootlicker begins with the slay bells used for rythym section in the openning track, toy! it's like some kind of trippy christmas song. i'm actually serious here. (there is actually a relation between santa type culture as we know it and magic mushrooms going waaaay back. research it!) anyway she's over before you know it. sad.
let it all be has an outstanding groove kind of like tipping the lion. this number is much more reserved. buzz tends to approach this song with a little more agression live. either way its just james dean cool. ultimate chill-out tune. it's almost 11 min long but around halfway through it starts up this schizophrenic whispering that leads into the second portion of let it all be which is another smooth grove that fades slowly in a rather sweetly haunting mantra. "dream of their fall. dream of their death." over n over. black santa really has a unique sound with a estern vibe, even throwing in a little harmonica drone. the lyrics are some of my personal fav from these guys, not making a lick of sense as usual but just sounding so curious and playful with the song. up the dumper is probably the catchiest tune melvins ever did. this upbeat little number about a taboo sex act should be on the radio! mary lady bobbykins, like let it all be, has two parts to it and feel like polar opposites. the first is a mournful down tempo piece that i really love. i thinks it's about the death of his mother. the song turns into some kind of surf type music. lyrically it seems to show thanks to someone/something. lone rose holding now is a song i enjoy playing myself. lyrically bewildering. the instruments seem to be in synch. the bridge is sweet. all over in couple min. the closer, prig, was obviously fun for the band to mess around with and induldge in. for most, skipping past the eletronic meandering will probably be typical. if you get passed all the muck, you can kick back with a great acoustic tune that reminds one of pink floyd! it's a beautiful tune that is nice to have in the background while chilling with some buddies enjoying some cold ones. too bad the actual song portion of prig is over before you know it. stag is my fav melvins. this is my second. i recomend this to any fan of rock music.

Melvins - 'Bootlicker' (Ipecac),
By
This review is from: Bootlicker (Audio CD)
One thing about the Melvins is that one can never be too sure as to what their upcoming release is going to be like.'Bootlicker' is apparently the second CD in a trilogy of a three disc pressing extravaganza as it was put out between '99's 'Maggot' and '00's 'Crybaby'.Vocalist/guitarist Buzz Osbourne and crew showcase their own brand of what I would call part mutated alternative, part psych metal.'Bootlicker' tends to show the band's more melodic side,of which is a good thing.I believe 'Stag' was the last Melvins CD I had before this.Tracks that I thought were good are the sort of laid back ten-minute "Let It Be All","Up The Dumper" and "Jew Boy Flower Head".Definitely a keeper.Might appeal to fans of Kyuss,Nailbomb,Rollins Band and possibly Sepultura.

Pushing 40 now a lot of bands I used to like just give me a headache now. This is a very slow melodic album for the melvins to release. Yet this release is very Melvins, you would not mistake if for anything else.

Great Record,

As usual the Melvins serve up one hell of a record. The Bootlicker is totally different than anything they have yet to release and I must say thats what makes them so great. Their ability to go in different musical directions and actually pull it off quite well. A must get for any person who likes real music.

Been secretly jonesing for those old dog-eared copies of "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" or "Fragile" but just can't bring yourself to get them on cd? Never fear-that's why we have the Melvins, and the latest installment of the trilogy. More than any of their records, this is a headphone album. I would even call it a summation of pop music from the last 20 years, ending as it does with that catchiest of guitar licks that we all know so well (I won't spoil it, though you'll hear the whole tune on the final cd). Like a good serialized novel, this works as a piece with the Maggot, expanding on its sounds and themes. Overall it's like a good quiet night by the fireside with Buzzo and Co. I can't wait for The Crybaby!

I bought this expecting a lot of things, but I was pleasantly surprised. A very rewarding album, indeed. Dark, somewhat jazzy acoustic tunes that are still loud and bass-heavy. This is a very creative and artistic effort. They deserve a round of applause for the Ipecac trilogy. So far, I am really enjoying it. This don't sound like career suicide to me! Best song: Let It All Be

Not a typical Melvins album,

Listen closely and learn. Most of the reviews of this album are fairly accurate. Here is what you get: The closest thing to Pink Floyd Melvins will probably ever produce and release. By Melvins standards it is soft throughout, it is generally consistent with a lot of synth. sounding tracks which are actually enjoyable as compared to the electronic feedback and god awful techno sounds scattered throughout albums like Stag ( which is still a very good album ),Honky ( which bites ), Electroretard ( only worth buying if you want the fantastic nine minute track Youth Of America ), and Hostile Ambient Takeover ( still worth buying for tracks 1,2,3,4, and 6 ). Remember there are no hard or heavy songs on this album. The only really [bad] song is the last song Prig.
