5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, March 7, 2004
This review is from: Boots (Audio CD)
Wow, is this ever a cool CD. Noe Venable has quite a unique voice, though someone I played this for thought it was Mazzy Star. I don't really see that, but I suppose if you're going to be compared to someone Hope Sandoval is not bad!
She gets us right out of the gate with title track, "Boots" which is a stunning song. It's got a great low drum beat, that's barely there, but so powerful. The eerie backing vocals are chill inducing
"Prettiness" makes great use of the light picking on the guitar and her voice floating over the top is sublime. She'd probably hate that I say the song is pretty, but it is. I love it when artists take a sound and then put words to it that are disparate. This is a lovely flowing song but the lyrics start out:
She utilizes this method quite frequently, actually. The music is gorgeous, the lyrics almost harsh, a beautiful combination.
Well, I won't go over every song because they're all gems.
If intelligent atmospheric "pop" is your cup o' tea pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing., July 1, 2002
This review is from: Boots (Audio CD)
I had the fortunate experience, like so many Noe fans, of seeing Miss Venable, Alan Lin, and Todd Sickafoose open for Ani DiFranco (I saw her in Bloomington, Illinois). I couldn't remember the name, and went through months of wondering who the girl with the amazing, piercing soprano voice was. I tried in vain, after one performance, to sing the song "Boots" (or parts) to my friends, and finding her name four months later was one of the happiest days in my recent memory. It may sound sappy, but it's true: Noe Venable is a true jewel of the independent music scene whose voice deserves a greater audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Angelic voice is sure to win big with all!, February 22, 2002

Last night, I saw Noe open for Ani Difranco in Ames, IA. I immediately bought this CD and have been listening to it ever since. The CD is amazing in itself, but nothing beats seeing her trio perform live. The melodies and her voice are sure to put anyone at ease because they are SO CALMING! Pop this one in when you're ready to relax and kick back. There are a few faster songs with amazing beats; the majority are ballads. "Boots", the title track, is by far my favorite so far. If you have the chance to see her trio live, don't let it pass you by! You'll regret it after hearing this amazing girl sing!

Yes, all these reviewers are correct. Noe Venable is a sunrise, a trail of rose petals, an aurora borealis, a garden. She has the beauty and simplicity of a child, but the wisdom of old age. Her songs are magic, loneliness, imagination, love, hope, and pain.

The exquisite combination of her stunning lyrics and haunting melodies make Ms. Venable one of the very greatest singer-songwriters I have ever heard. How many times can one fall in love?

5.0 out of 5 stars Her songs are « de purs joyaux », October 18, 2007

You all are very lucky people. I hope you know that. I didn't see Noe open Ani Difranco concert because I live in Paris and unfortunately she's unknow in France. I think I discovered her on NRP, or something like that with Juniper (in "The World Is Bound By Secret Knots", very good cd also ). I've "just" had the pleasure to listen to her, but it was a GREAT pleasure. Her songs are « de purs joyaux » Her voice and her compositions are really amazing and subtle. Noe deserves to be known beyond the U.S. borders. So I'm waiting for her Parisian show;) Moreover (I'm sure you don't realize that) her pronunciation is very clear and understandable. It's pretty important and pleasant for french people.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her live in Santa Barbara opening up for Ani D. She is such a sweet lady whom my wife and I chatted with for a few minutes after the show (she signed my boots album too! yay!). So anyways, the album Boots has such a relaxing appeal to it, along with Noe's angelic voice, playful folk guitar work, Todd Sickafoose's fascinating bass work, and fabulous metaphoric lyrical content. We've played this album almost 100 times now, it's great stuff. check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Once in a long while, May 30, 2003
By
Ram "rambr" (Berkeley, CA United States) - See all my reviews

Once in a long while there is a singer, musician, poet, composer and actress that is able to pull it all together in a song. I saw Noe play live in a crowd of 50, and she gives it all away in her songs. Her intensity is bound to cross even through the most skeptical of us. And as if it was not enough, she is one of the best storytellers I have listened to in a long time. I am very happy I stumbled upon her music.
It is rare these days to meet musicians whose sole goal is to do music and to perform. And I can assure that Miss Venable's desire is so. Or else, why would she pour it out in a 50 people charity concert? We all left the place dizzy... The song boots will crack your heart open.
