About the Author
Clarinetist, saxophonist, jazz master Wendell Harrison has 18 recorded releases to his credit including the most recent on Enja records entitled Rush & Hustle. Harrison's knowledge derived from early years of development with his mentors Barry Harris and Grant Green. He has written two welcomed jazz study aids, The Be Boppers Method Books Volumes I & II to aid musicians in the study of improvisation. Harrison received many awards including the Arts Midwest Jazz Masters Award. Harrison performed with an all star ensemble, THE MICHIGAN JAZZ MASTERS in an international performance tour of African and the Middle East. Wendell also performed as a jazz master with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra featuring two movements from his five movement suite SOMETHING FOR POPS. Harrison is currently performing with his all star clarinet ensemble MAMA'S LICKING STICK which features each member of the clarinet family. Often Don Byron and Howard Johnson perform with this outstanding ensemble. The latest release is entitled RUSH & HUSTLE on Enja records.

It's a great book to understand the bebop approach if you are into Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie or Bud Powell transcriptions.The leap from those theorics scales to the actual playing in an improvisational setting is not clear but the writer suggest some steps to work from.

This book was easy to follow and must helpful for improv basics. I have already ordered Book II. Someone said the book was short, but if you follow the instructions, it is not short at all--you just have to practice. Is Book III coming soon? Charles Prophet
