Wine atlases and encyclopedias abound, but this book, which is both, succeeds especially well because of its tight focus and the expertise of its authors. Duijker, the author of 45 books on wine, has been honored in France for his oenological erudition; Broadbent, the longtime Head of the Wine Department at Christie's, has written authoritative works on wine collecting (e.g., The New Great Vintage Wine Book, LJ 4/1/97). Within this regional atlas are 50 clearly drawn maps, useful for understanding terroir ("region") and locating vineyards. Short introductions explain the region and its appellations. However, the bulk of the text describes the chateaux-over 2000-listing cru ("vintage"), owner, area, number of cases produced, percentages of varietals, second wines, other estates, and address, telephone, and FAX. Elegantly brief commentary describes high points of each chateau's wines and history, while lovely little photos (and several large ones) are scattered throughout. At the end are an index and gazetteer, plus a list of the classifications and a second index of communes.
