If you are interested in the Reivers and the culture that created them, this is a good book to read.
The borders were a hard place to live and survive unless you were as hard and mean as the enimies you
had to face. Man against the worst of men. Hardship and death were the way of life. You were either
quick or dead.

Keith Durham has already written an introductory book to the Border Reivers for the Men-At-Arms line for Osprey. This volume, written for the Warriors line, follows the line of padding out the general survey approach of the MAA books with more specific information, with an emphasis on typical equipment and lifestyle. Used in conjunction with other Osprey books related to 16th & 17th century Scotland and England, it fills in some of the areas only suggested at by the older MA book. Mr Durham has benefited from his further research, resulting in an informative and interesting guidebook.

My main complaint as usual is that the mandatory page length always means there is not enough room, so Osprey readers who want to know more will have to move on to the sources. This time it is especially disappointing since the quite relevant illustrations by the late great Angus MacBride were not given the full-page plate treatment they deserved. Balancing that fault are the color photos of the re-enactors, who show in three dimensions an excellent array of replicated period equipment.

More than just a record of events, this provides some understanding of what gave rise to events in border history.

This book has a lot of great photos and maps. It is a hard read, though. The author likes to quote verbatim, Scottish accent, bad spelling, and all. There is no translation. I had to read the quotes (and there are many) out loud trying to decipher them. It makes for a slow read. My Scottish accent is not that good; I'm an American. I think I got the gist of it. The photos helped. If you are from Scotland, you might have a better go at it. How is your 16th century Scots? I can't help you with the spelling.
