Not as good as hoped. :(,

Like many, I was hoping this guide book would be as good as the Fallout 3 guide. Sadly, it falls FAR short.
Starting to play Borderlands, you will have many questions about weapon statistics and how they compare, which skill tree items are worth spending points on and which aren't, class mods, and more. None of the questions I had were answered by the book. At least not that I could find. Which brings me to my second point. There is no index, and the table of contents for the actual gameplay part of the book consists only of 4 chapter listings. So, if you need help during a mission, expect to spend lots of time flipping page by page through the book until you find the mission you want. Usually, it takes less time to just figure it out yourself in the game. If you can manage to actually find the mission you are on, the book will provide an ok walkthrough, and a nice map that has the exact locations of where the quest items are. About half the book is dedicated to nice descriptions of guns and enemies. The gun descriptions are fairly useless but the enemy descriptions can be helpful in giving each one's weaknesses. If you really get into Borderlands, its OK to get for the Amazon price. Just don't expect great things from it.

An average guide to an Amazing Game,
By
This review is from: Borderlands Signature Series Strategy Guide (Bradygames Signature Guides) (Paperback)
This is only the 2nd guide I've bought in about 5 years now. After being amazed by the content and quality that the GOTY Fallout 3 Guide had, I was hoping that this guide would be as near as good.
It's not. While the guide does it's job, it tells you what to do, suggestions, and many sections for bios, information on guns, enemies etc. it just doesn't do a great job at it. While I spent hours combing thru the Fallout 3 guide, or as a kid, how I remember I would spend even more hours on those "Pokemon" guides...here I spent not even an hour on. I occasionally take glimpses especially for side quests, and to make sure I don't skip anything important. This is an average guide at best. For a game of this calibur, I wish there were other guides available to me at the time of purchase, but as I said, this guide does it's job.

Decent Guide but nothing special,

I have a new rule about only buying strategy guides in hardcover. It seems like if the publisher goes through the effort of making a hardcover edition of their guide they put a great deal of effort in the guide itself. This book is the last softcover I'm buying and has helped me make up my mind. Its a mediocre strategy guide that does the job and nothing more. I purchased it mainly because I was promised lots of lore for Borderlands which has very little story in the game itself. There is almost no information on the game world and most of what is there is sarcastic and full of jokes to the point where I wonder if their just making it up as they go along for giggles. The quest guide itself is pretty good but nothing amazing. It was helpful in finding all the claptraps but thats pretty much all I used it for. There was no free form or easter egg section. The information on the different types of guns were pitful. The pictures were very nice though. Buy this if your a hardcore completionist and sandbox games scare you otherwise pass.

Despite all of the negative reviews of this guide i thought it was a pretty good guide. All of the complaints about not being able to find a certain quest/area in the guide are rediculous considering all of the quests both in the guide and game are presented in a fairly linear fashion. The maps are incredibly useful, especially for finding all of the hidden gun/item chests, or if your having a hard time finding an item for a particular quest. The weapons guide isnt as inclusive as i would have liked it to be, but there are SO many guns in Borderlands youd likely need a completely seperate guide for it to be complete. They do however cover all of the different manufacturers and types of weapons, and all of the legendary weapons. The bestiary part of the guide is nice but not particularly useful, even on the boss fights, since the loot is random and even the static drops have random stats. My only real complaint is the lack of info of the 3 Borderlands DLC that are currently available. Even though they werent available at first, the game isnt that old, and the content was likely already finished before the guide was.. Probably means there will be a "Game of the Year" edition of Borderlands and the guide

A pretty good guide from bradygames,

I don't usually like Brady guides (which tend to be hard on the eyes and not terribly helpful), but this one is quite good. While it's true it doesn't fill in much of the story or flesh out the characters, there are good maps and helpful suggestions on how to order the quests as well as how to approach them. The only complaint I really have is that the weapons charts aren't very useful.
As for the comparisons with the one of the best guides ever written for one of the best games ever made (Fallout 3), I don't think they're fair. There are so many choices in Fallout 3 that are game effecting and that guide covers those things in depth. The choices in Borderlands, on the other hand, are not so vast. It's about shooting things and getting stuff and this guide covers those things quite well.

It turns out that the game is very straight forward. So, the game guide isn't entirely necessary, but for a few search quests it can be quite useful if you're looking for something with little patience.

My title may sound a little gross, but this guide really tells you the best way to NOT become skag vomit!
The guide shows you all the various missions and side missions in this game. The weapons are all here and you know before you are eligble to get these weapons which ones are the best for that mission. The maps are very good and show you exactly where the bad guys and the best swag are. The images are from the game and give you a real good idea of what you are up against. Bradygames always does an excellant guide. Now, go kill some skags and get the money and ammo they vomit up.

Huge Guide, Lots of Info,
By J Smith (Charleston, SC United States) - See all my reviews

No idea why there are nay-sayers for this guide. It's huge and packed with great info. Contains maps for all the areas and info for all the quests. Breaks down the skills and talks about some of the cooler weapons you can find. It's everything I had hoped for and more!

I haven't got a chance to buckle down, and get into the game while reading the book, but I'm sure it's gonna have more than enough info. to be able to eventually beat the game. I've got it on X Box 360, but I'm not connected to X Box Live. So, that in and of itself limits my options, but I'm going to give it a go pretty soon, and see what happens.
